Using aquarium lights

first off i would like to say hello to everyone and let everyone know that i am a noob to the forums. i just became a member a few days ago and there is alot of interesting reading here and alot of knowledgeable people. there may be a post somewhere with something similar to the question i am going to ask, but i have not had time to read everypost and man there's a lot of them, so on with my question, i am really big into saltwater aquariums and have an extra power compact fixture that is 2x96watts with one bulb 10,000k and the other actinic blue(420nm). very good light spectrum for growing corals in a marine environment. i was wondering since i have an extra fixture would it have any other uses or is it best just sitting in my closet? the fixture has built in fans to pull heat away from the bulbs and has a plexiglass cover over the bulbs to keep water from splashing on them. i would imagine the light wouldn't be good for all aspects of growing but i thought it may be better than a couple of cfl's over some seedling. any input would be much appreciated, and btw you guys rock.

sound like the same light iam using, i use it for vegging, and a 600watt hps for flowering,
i also like saltwater fish, 2 tanks at the moment 1 for sea horses, and in the other reef and fish, 2 lion fish, trigger, clown, some Australian fish (cool looking guy) plus many more.

read it real fast but i do just want to say that i heard its better to have a standered spectrum rather than wide spectrum. something about the unnecessary infra red. maybe I'm wrong, there's a shit ton of info out there.

The light would work but the color spectrums are off. You wanna stay in the 4500-6500 range for plant growth. What size tank you got? Im setting up a 220 reef right now I cant wait. Good luck

i have a 46 gal bowfront and a 10 gal nano at the moment, my girlfriend wont let me have anymore till i buy her a bigger house, maybe i be like the browndirtwarrior and say you just watch me go get you a bigger house honey.:blsmoke: i doubt she would approve of that either. but on a real note i never realized how much reefkeeping was like growing, only with a reef tank you cant smoke your hard work. oh well they're pretty to look at.

I've done some searching but would like some opinions as nothing I have come across sounded definate. I have an aquarium lighting hood I would like to use for sprouts/germination like the original poster's. 2 x 34"/96W (192W total) Power Compact Flourescents, 4 pin/straight connectors. I am unable to find actual plant grow bulbs in this size/type connector. Anyone have a source for them? If not, which is prefered for germ/veg growth... 10K "daylight" bulbs, actinic/blue bulbs, or 50/50 daylight/actinic?

I've read that 6.5Kelvin is the right spectrum range but I can't seem to find the spectrum actinic bulbs put out. I thought 6.5K was more blue but I am not sure. Please advise!

thanks in advance!
