Using Fridge Filter for Tap Water

My tap is 80ppm on a 500 scale which is respectable. I was curious what kind of drop this would get me? If I can get down into the 50's or 60's I don't think RO would be of any benefit. Thoughts?

I've reccomended this before to someone who had waaay to much water being used daily to justify an RO
 
It seemed like a good idea, I just don't like the aspect of RO that you lose so much in waste. It's so.....well, wasteful. I may try it and see what I get.
Good ones are a major percentage of the cost of an RO system though....

I've got mine on a float so I only waste water up until my holding tank is full. Then it stops all together.

Depends on the ro system, and how much you know about ro systems going in.
You mentioned waste. The waste water is flushing away the waste (obviously) how good or bad your ro determines your waste ratio in a way. What your target ppm is also matters (getting to 0ppm will be a lot of waste. getting to 50ppm will be a lot less waste).
In the filters you mentioned, the waste isn't being flushed away, instead being held until you need to replace them however often that is.
The waste to consider is: Is it cheaper for you to replace filters, or the cost of waste water.

You guys are right, I did not consider the waste will be less depending on your starting ppm and what you want. In my case 80ppm.
I could catch the wastewater and use it for the yard or my wife's plants outside if I was truly concerned.
We use a shit ton of water bottles btw. If I installed an undersink unit, could it just be there as part of the kitchen, and not hooked to the wall in the garage (ha)? In other words, could I install a "drinking" RO and then use it for my grow when needed.
I am not going to grow all the time so it would not be running 30 gallons a week usually. I will probably do two crops a year.

Absolutely. I've done this. I just teed off the line going to the sink dispenser(clean ro) and pput a valve after it to route to my holding tank to fill with a float. That way I can leave the valve off so when it's full, it fills the underside tank and is used normally.
