Veg Cabinet Question

I have a little germination station thing with the humidity dome and everything to get my seeds and ultimately my clones started.

Than, I plan on potting them in 3 gallon pots and moving them to my veg cabinet. We are using a cabinet that is basically 4x2x6. My plan was to split the cabinet so there is a top and a bottom half. I'm trying to maximize my space. I was hoping eventually to use one shelf for my mothers and the other shelf for clones and vegging plants.

Well, I got the lights in yesterday and they are fricken HUGE!!! My hubby decided to order 85watt CFL's. Each bulbs puts on 4,200 lumens, so going by the 2500-3000 lumens per sq foot, we planned on using 5 bulbs per shelf.

I'm afraid the track hubby is building to hold the lights is going to end up being at least 8-10 inches. Thats only going to leave about 2 feet or so of grow room. Is that going to be enough?

My flower tent has a 400watt HPS hortilux bulb and digital ballast. I was hoping to keep up a continous grow by using clones in the seperate cabinet that way when I harvest the flower tent, I will already have completely vegged plants ready for the 12/12. Is my veg cabinet going to be big enough? We are growing in the basement and have limited height. 6 feet high is the maximum that will fit.

Would I be better off laying the cabinet on its side so I have 6 feet of "floor" space and 4 feet of height to allow for more vertical growth?

i like the thought process behind what you are doing, though i beleive that you will have to veg under the 400w at some stage... It it a way better light for veg cycle than CFL's... I only use CFL's for bringing seedlings on and clones if i have them, when the roots are strong enough i put them straight under the HPS on 16/8 light cycle. I know that height is an issue for you so you may want to only veg under the HPS for a short time, but would strongly recommend that you use the HPS for the majority of your veg cycle.

Hope this helps

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I'm the smoker in the family! Hubby tokes on occasion but its more my thing! It helps with my pain and nausea and makes me happier and when I'm happy, hubbys happy! LOL!

I sorta figured I would have to veg them a couple of weeks under the 400 before flipping to the 12/12. I think I'll lay the cabinet on its side so I have the 6 foot floor space to work with and an extra foot of height in there. It'll mostly be for the clones and mothers but I don't want them to be squished up, I wasn't planning on those lights being so big!

I'm really excited about my first grow. I'm still waiting on my seeds, ordered from VISC-hoping they will be in the end of the week. I've got a pure sativa coming called Burmese, its been designed to grow more compact like the indica's and the flower time is 6-8 weeks. I also ordered a medical pack (I have a chronic autoimmune disease called sarcoidosis) that has lady liberty, nagano gold and rx which is a cross between romulan and FI. Plus I'm supposed to get some good freebies.

I couldn't wait any long and tossed half a dozen bag seeds into my germinator as I call it last night! I figured I would just play around with them until the good stuff arrives!

Sounds like you have everything planned, well done to you. Have you got any other seeds coming for a varity other than the sativa ??? I would have to say that sativa is my smoke of choice as i can function on it rather than sit there with my head in my lap.... I'm from Aus and sativa grows best there outdoors due to the long summers... I'm about to germinate my 3rd grow using 3 bagseed and 3 big bud seeds that i got from Holland last week.

Sorry for talking crap here.

I know one of the seed types is a full indica and one is a hybrid and the other two are sativa's. I like different smoke to choose from depending on what I am doing. If I had a long day at work and just want to veg or if I need to run errands and clean house sorta thing! LOL!!

I do plan on ordering some different strains but I figure I've got enough to get started and once I have a nice mother of each strain, than I will expand to other strains. I wonder if the freebie seeds they send will be marked as to what they are?

I'm in northern USA so we don't really have much time to grow outdoors. Even though our yard is fenced in, I think our neighbors would catch on. I grow a large flower garden of actual flowers and people are always stopping over to check it out and I'd hate to have to answer the question to WHATS THAT and them pointing at my giant cola! LOL!!

Not a good idea to grow outside then ???? I'm Australian and we have really long summers there. I grew a massive sativa about 8 years back now whilst living in the city. I grew it in a massive black pot and it grew to over 8 feet tall and gave me over 6 oz of dried weed and a shit load of little buds that i sold on. That's the only time i've ever grown outdoors, it's very hard for me to wait for 6 months before you can smoke which is why i choose a basic indoor set up. I now live in the U.K have for 6 years and there is no way you can grow outdoors here it's just to cold, wet and well shit really. But i can't wait to get my wee grow set up started... Have a good week. Speak soon. :joint:
