I just spoke to a guy who says he used to grow and started his plants on 24/0 until they had the 2nd set of full leaves and then week by week reduced the light time until 12/12. Each week would reduce the light time by 2 hours.
He claimed this mimics nature and that it caused less stress to the plant. He said that a drastic light cycle change causes the root growth to slow.
I normally use a 24hr cycle and switch to 18/6 after a week or two.
