Veg Tent Setup - 2x4x5

Just thought I'd throw a quick thread to update progress on my veg tent, as there's a lot going on.
2 plants in 3 gallon fabric pots are Critical Kush clones that I just left alone, and they grew substantially in the cloner. Long roots.
20190117_194046.jpg

The prominent large plant is an Afghan freebie from Herbie's. It wasn't drooping an hour ago so I have that to figure out.
The seedlings are all random bagseed except for one, a Dr Underground free seed called "Crystal Meth". Why? I have no idea. But it's feminized. I'll most likely give away the other seedlings.

Seeds should be here any day, I will be growing:

Ace Seeds Purple Haze x Malawi
I needed a sativa, thought I'd go all out and get a 12-16 week flower one. This one's gonna be in the flower tent for awhile.

Barney's Ayahuasca Purple
For the purple and the yield

And a White Widow x Big Bud from Herbie's
Because, why not?

So that's 2 CK, Afghan, CM, and the three above strains I have to try and cram into a 2x4 tent. I will probably enter the Afghan into early flower. Stay tuned

Ps - Just switched from 600 true watt LED to 600W MH because of heat and humidity issues.

You've got all that in a 2x4? I hope you have some more space you can use. I have 2 plants in a 2x4 and I'm wall to wall in there. How long you planning to veg?

It's really only gonna be 7 plants, but I'm thinking a month of veg for the clones ~2 months for the seeds. Realistically it might not fit, I don't mind flowering the clones early though I have more than I know what to do with.
The plants will probably get huge, but my flower tent is a 4x4x7 so I have plenty of room if need be.

So you added the MH because it was too cold I guess?

2 month from seed you will be lucky to fit two plants in there if growth isn't slowed due to cold.

Be interested to hear your thought on the long flowering sativa when its done.
Good luck chief.
Actually the opposite, it was getting too hot in there with no way to vent all that heat generated from the LEDs. The plan was to use LEDs and avoid having to use a hood, strong exhaust and humidifier but with the size of the tent there was no way around it. Generating about 370 true watts from the LEDs would raise temps to 91+
I tried adding a small evap cooler which brought temps to ~82, but I also wasn't happy with the plant's performance compared to the HIDs, so I just switched to a 600W MH. Amazon returns makes it easy.

I'm sure it'll be tight, but I'm confident I can fit at least 4 plants in there. My flower tent is much larger and if need be I can move plants over early. I have a bunch more clones of the CK, really the roots were getting too long so I just moved them to soil and I'm experimenting with 12/12 from clone with one, two others in 3 gallon pots and one in a container a little less than one gallon. I'll see which get root bound. Obviously, the setup isn't idea or professional and I don't want people thinking I recommend doing what I'm doing. I'll be taking clones of all the strains I like and creating a more organized garden for my next cycle.

If you guys are interested here's a link to a thread on the sativa I purchased:
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=262734
I only purchased one seed, but they sent me a three pack which I thought was pretty cool of them. Package date of about 7 months ago.

Transplanted this Afghan into a 1 gallon container, then put it in the flowering tent.

Bigger guys in the solo cups are random bagseed I'm growing for fun, those are gonna be given away. The three clones will be transplanted into the flower tent once I no longer have room for them.
I have 7 different strains here in the black dish.
Starting from the seedling next to the big guy furthest back-
Dr Underground - Crystal Meth(why), King Kong Planted 3 and 4 days ago if I remember correctly
Barney's - Ayahuascha Purple
"Female" - White Widow - Big Bud
Ace Seeds - Purple Haze x Malawi
Barney's - Blue Cheese Auto
And another Afghan freebie, I'll probably end up flowering early or giving this one away
Snapchat-1377342965.jpg
All seeds after King Kong were planted yesterday after they all showed their taproot.
My two autos, Heavyweight Extreme Impact and the Blue Diesel proved to be nonviable, figures. They're sending me another blue diesel but I'll be saving that one.

The plan is to have the photos in 5 gallon pots with the auto in a 3 gallon. So 6 plants in one 2x4 with a 600W MH. Gonna be crowded, I plan to FIM the plants once, early on and from there use a net to control the canopy. I'm open to recommendations on how to make the best of the space. I expect the sativa to dominate the space, and may give it it's own closet until flowering.

And a note on the inline fan I bought for the tent -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTM0H6I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Now it's a good fan, strong, but it's lowest setting is much higher than I'd like it to be. Like, The lower end of High on the IPower is equatable to the lowest on the Vivosun. I will be returning it, and purchasing what I have for my other tent.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D8S8MWB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For $30 more I get a carbon filter and some yoyos to play with.

Seems light a hell of a lot of light in a 2x4 dude. But hey if its working you go for it.

Did you get any freebies with your herbies purchase?

600W seems perfect, I wouldn't want to use any less. But this is only my second run so what do I know?

I got 2 fem Afghan Kush freebies, 2 Bad Azz Kush from barneys and 1 Blue Cheese Auto from barneys

Two clones in the corner, Crystal Meth and King Kong in the 1 gallons (short veg for them), Ayauascha Purple in the middle solo with dark leaves, Big Bud x White Widow to the right, Purple Haze x Malawi is the small one, it took a couple days longer to break ground but I expect her to tower over them all. You can see my upside down oscilating fan, I don't know if that'll last I'm trying to figure out how to utilize my space the best I can
.

In the corner in a 3 gallon is an Auto Blue Diesel I got as a replacement for the one that wouldn't germ, this one was strong and had lines, and broke the shell in 24 hours. I put it in one of those things you put in water that expands, not sure what it's called and then surrounded it by soil.
The other auto, Blue Cheese was stunted and I had to get rid of it. I have really bad luck with autos it seems

Progressing well otherwise!

The big plants at the back look like they are very happy compared to the first pictures you posted of them. Whatever your doing keep doing it!
How are you liking the air cooled hood compared to the led?

Started giving them BioBizz fish mix, they seem to like it. The air cooled hood is much more managable. At the inline fan's lowest setting I'm getting day temps from 72-79 F, nighttime temps as low as 58, with ambient being 70 F.

If anyone's interested in how the Afghan is doing, it's not droopy anymore, and it's thriving in the flowering room. This will be the first plant I flower directly from seed.
IMG_20190131_225621.jpg

I took one of the 185 watt LEDs and put it in a closet, Relative humidity stays naturally around 60 and temps are steady at 65. I'm returning this LED, and have ordered 4x HLG 120 3500K Quantum boards, running all 4 in series in either a 2x2 or a 4x1 depending on how I want to utilize my space. Very low tech low budget closet grow right now but the QBs might change that. Already have the driver wired up, just waiting on the boards. Don't be fooled by the shitty electrical tape, it's all soldered and heat shrieked under there.
IMG_20190131_230124.jpg

The plan is to use the closet for Autos and for plants if I run out of space in the 2x4. The boards should be here Saturday.

Fun fact about this picture, you can see a probably failed attempt at mainlining. I did everything right, but I topped the two growth nodes. Not sure what the outcome is gonna be, hopefully the nodes grow back. Just testing shit on random bagseed.

Tried taking a picture with the LEDs off but flash wasn't cooperating

Careful adding too much nutrients derived from the ocean . Salts build up fast so I recommend leeching soil monthly to get rid of these excess salts. Pour clean water slowly through your dirt, twice the pot size so 4 gallons for a 2 gallon will help tremendously. If u dont u will get bad ph swings and lockouts in flower

Not my veg tent, this is in the closet right now but...

4x HLG120 V2 Quantum Boards in 3500K wired in series with an HLG-240H-C2100B, these have the LM301 LEDs
I had droopy plants, but within an hour of putting this up they perked up. The lights are cool to the touch, and the aluminum on top is only warm.
Yes... Those are zip ties. I'm trying to find a 2'x6" strip of aluminum, HD and Lowes have them but they're overprice for what they are. The boards don't weigh much I just need something to keep them rigid.

Gonna also do a bit of cable management, I'm not a big fan of these molex connectors, though they do work.
20190203_135618.jpg

Here's how I connected power and ground, I'm an automotive guy so black is ground red is power.
20190203_143012.jpg

And a bonus shot of my second attempt at manifolding
20190203_143016.jpg

Back to the Veg tent

The small plants are all progressing normally, the auto blue diesel just broke ground.
The two CK clones are growing well, the one on the left has huge fan leaves, about as large as my hands (XL glove)
The one on the right has more normal size fan leaves. Is this a root thing, or because I haven't trained that plant or some other shit?
I Fimmed every node I could see on the plant on the right and supercropped to keep an even canopy. Should be interesting to see what a 3 gallon pot will yield with the CK.
Humidity control is a PITA, I keep having to fill the humidifier every 18 hours or so. I run the heater constantly now so I'm getting night temps of 72 daytime temps of 80 and it also keeps humidity down, I'm reading a max of 50 average of 37%. I'm hoping once this tent is full of foliage I'll be able to give my humidfier a break.

This is what I mean when I say the fan leaves are huge... The plants get the same amount of nutrients and water, the plant on the right is supercropped and fimmed. The one on the right is mostly left alone. Pretty cool.

So I'm faced with a dilemma.
I grew out a bunch of different strains thinking I'd weed out the ones I didn't like. Problem is, I like the way all of them are growing

These two big ones are probably gonna get thrown into flower within the new two weeks.

A little explanation of exactly what's going on here, skip if you don't like to read:

Starting from the top left -
Critical Kush clone - Was growing very tall with strong branches and huge leaves, I believe this one had over 14 inches of roots when I transplanted from the cloner.
Supercropped the main branch just to see what would happen otherwise it's pretty much untrained from clone.

On the top right
Another CK clone - Fimmed twice on every node and supercropped to keep an even canopy, no real defoliation done to it yet. A lot of thinner branches and a lot of tops.

The one that has dark fan leaves is my failed attempt at manifolding, it's actually trying to grow 4 tops from where I topped it.
Solo cup - Ace Purple Haze x Malawi, it took a couple days longer than the others to show it's face and is growing slower than the others despite being planted at the same time. Maybe its a landrace sativa thing? Maybe it's a runt. I have 2 more seeds so I'm not too worried.

Just north of the solo is the Big Bud x White Widow

To the right is the Crystal Meth, I think it's sativa dominant? Still trying to get to know the differences. That plant was a dr underground freebie with an unattractive name but I really like the way it's growing. It's Destroyer (cannabiogen) X Critical Mass

To the left of that is King Kong, I know all these directions are confusing the tent is kind of a mess right now. I have more King Kong seeds so I might just take cuttings of this one if I like it and get rid of it, or put it into an early flower.

At the bottom of the pic is the Ayahuasca Purple. I'm really hopeful for that one as well.

The neglected plant to the bottom right is another CK clone, it's been fed just tap and filtered water, the yellowing is probably N deficiency? It was supercropped like a 4 leaf clover, I think this method of training is cool but I don't think I'd use it again. Too early to really say that though.

Oh also out of the picture in the corner is a Blue Diesel Auto growing in a 3 gallon pot, still a seedling
20190209_130111.jpg

SO TO SUMMARIZE

I have way too many plants
3 CK clones, Big bud x white widow, Crystal METH, Purple Haze x Malawi, King Kong, Ayahausahhschahshcha purple, and a random bagseed

20190209_130032.jpg

Part of the beauty of growing is you can do whatever you want, right? Since I'm new to this and haven't even had a harvest yet, I'd say I'm very inexperienced and I've just been testing out different methods and training to see what I like best.
So far I prefer fimming to topping, I have this weird thing about supercropping, oh and I plan to try and make the neglected plant grow into a sort of spiral shape. Will it work? Probably, but I gotta fix the deficiencies first.

So basically it's a shitshow right now and I gotta cull the heard. I might just take cuttings of all but two of the small plants and save those for a future grow, when I have room in the tent. By the looks of it my 4x4 is gonna be crowded too.

Not sure how I feel about these fabric pots, so far they've been working and they work fine, but the sides always leak water and I have concerns for mold or other undesired bacterial growth.

Sorry to all the professionals if I hurt your eyes :spew:

Sidenote: With the increased foliage it is much easier to keep a better humidity level. Still 40% but it doesn't dip below that even with humidifier off. Humidistat in humidifier is still broken, I was hoping it'd fix itself. Nighttime humidity is still a problem so I've just been leaving it off. Fuckin Walmart.

i run two 300w vivaspectra led’s in my 39x39x72 tent, Ambient house temp of 22 degree celsius, thermastate on 10 exhaust. To fix the heat there I just use a small 4 inch vent fan from vivosun turned on low minimum venting into the room. Then open the windo a crack, block off the upper half of the window in my garden room then open the window a crack on the other wide of the house and cover the bottom half. Put a 10 inch fan in the hallway to move air cirulation to the other room and us my garden to heat the house lol. Im in canada, average tempatures outside are -9 to -15 celsius. My tent itself hAs an internal temp of 24-26 through the day

Mind you my garden has about 1400w more worth of lighting as I have a tiered indoor garden. So a lot more heat to deal with than you but

TLDR; if you use the heat correctly you can save on your heat bill.
