Vegging in plain ol potting soil.

Can you minimize stretch by growing in plain ol potting soil with no nutes? I am trying to think of ways to balance out light concentration with nutes or lack there of to minimize stretch.

I can't find any info on this site about this - but some other "normal" gardners do this to reduce stretch during the veg phase. They only give their plants nutes when flowering.

when you say stretch do you mean because your light isn't strong enough so the stem is stretching trying to get closer to the light?

i think ur lights are not strong enough
I got a question i got a 1month old clone and i was wondering how long till i start to see buds and when to harvest

I dont have a stretch issue. I was just thinking and I was asking if no nutes would constrain the plant because of the lack of "energy" to sprout up.

Here is my logic. Plain potting soil in a pot has a "smaller footprint" than a plant that is in the same sized pot that has all of the nutes that it needs. The plant in the nuted pot in theory can absorb many more building blocks than the plant in pure potting soil.

In other words the plant would balance its size with the given light and nutetrients. Because of less nutrients, the plants overall would be smaller - this I am hoping would mean closer node spacing.

Here is what made me think of this. For my buddy's first grow he had a bubble ponic setup with essentially aerogarden lights and perfect nutes. His plant was nice and thick but he had SEVERE node spacing (3+ inches apart). I was thinking that was due to a lack of lights and an abundant nutrient source.

My hypothesis is that the same lighting with less nutes would have led to a shorter plant with closer node spacing.

Is this logic flawed?

If you want your plant to be short and stocky keep your CFL's right on top of it. This should reduce the space between growing nodes. I have never really noticed a reduction in stretch w/ or w/out nuts. Of course there are nutes out there that will make your plant stretch but most nutes wont do this.

At least thats my idea :p

As always Take my info or anyone else's info with a grain of salt.
What works for some might suck for you.
Trial in error is the only true way to learn how to grow :p
