vegging with a shoplight?

i was wondering how long can i veg my clones with a 4ft shoplight 40watts per bulb b4 i put them under a 400 watt hps light?

As long as you want if you can keep the light close.

I would suggest you to switch to CFL's with a kelvin temp in the blue range (around 6000K.) You'll get much more growth for your money as far as wattage is concerned. Shop lights (halogen bulbs) are not ideal for growing and generate a shit ton of heat, whereas a CFL can be used to veg with little downsides.

It sounds like you are talking about 4 foot tubes in the shoplight, I have one under one now and my experience is about 1 foot. After that the light doesn't get to bottom of the plant, if you use some CFL on the sides you can go taller. Good luck!

Ah, you're talking about shop fluorescent lights, sorry for the confusion. You can veg as long as you want, but once you get to the point where the top leaves are shading the bottom leaves of the plant, you have to arrange the bulbs around the plant. You can do this with supplemental CFLs or you can arrange the tubes around the plant like a cone.

can i put it in with my 400 watt hps light ,like on the side of the wall if i mount it side ways or is that not even the case,cuz i figuer if i can use a 400 watt metal hailde wit my 400 watt hps i cud possibly use my 4ft shoplight to deliver not much but aleast a lil blue spectrum wit of course sum clf's is that possible?
