Vent/Filter Setup (Drawings)

I bought two used items at an exceptional price – a 12” Vortex Fan and a 12” Phat Filter. I have a reflector hood with 8” flanges. I have seen most ventilation systems constructed like the top of the two drawing below with the filter on one side of the hood and the fan on the other. If I am going to use the stuff I bought, this would entail me using two 12” to 8” couplers. Could I not just put everything on one “side” to reduce the number of transitions to one and have all 12” stuff the rest of the way. Seems it would help the filter run better. Input appreciated.

for maximum effeciency you would have to put the filter on the very end. drawing air thru it, right. other than that you could do what ever you want. as long as its a sealed system.you'll be fine

as far as i know you would never put a phat filter anywhere but the end. does it have a cap at the and. also keeping in mind the cooler the air thru the filter the more the smell is reduced

Oy. You are correct, there is a cap. Cooler air also makes sense.

When making a inflow vent, I understand that the inflow hole should be on the order of the same size as the exhaust hole (about 115 sq. in.). How to make a hole that size that does not allow light to seep in? Buy a 12" wall vent, install in near the floor and add a 90 degree "L" or something to eliminate light? Or, something with a hood outside? The only other way I can figure is to put the correct size vent on the outside wall very low and then cut the one on the inside of the wall about halfway up. Not sure if it would workgieven the size, unless I did two smaller ones.
