Venting a 2x4x5?

This is my first indoor grow and I plan to grow 4 clones. I have purchased:

A 2x4x5 grow tent
http://www.ebay.com/itm/230775122238?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1750wt_1156

A 1000W HPS Bulb/Non0vented Reflector/1000W switchable ballast
http://www.drgreenthumbshgs.com/Light_Kits-1000_Watt_Grow_Light_Kit_DL.html

I know it's not recommended but I plan to veg and flower under HPS due to my current shallow pockets. My question is on venting.. Is a 1000W non-cooled HPS going to be too hot for this tent? Should I get a 6" in line f or can I leave the tent door open during the day and have a fan blowing on my plants to keep the air circulating? The tent is going to be in my garage and I am concerned that if I leave the doors to the tent open gnats and other bugs/critters will be attracted to the light and make my tent their home.. Also, how far from the clones should the 1000W be? I plan to get clones that are 6"-12". Any input is welcome. Thanks for reading!

hey cali in a 2X4X5 i wouldn't recommend anything over 400w other wise heat will be a constant issue, you don't need a 6" inline to move air 12" or 14" table fan works great for just moving air around, leaving your doors open isn't advised for that reason especially if they are going to be in your garage you don't want any unwanted visitors. As for clones i would guess between XX" and how ever close you can get it to the bulb, it depends on what you wish to do with your plant do you wanna branch it out or keep it as a tight node single cola BUT i would seriously advise not going with such a big light or such a small tent you really should change one of these 2 variables

Thanks for the advice Talrox. I have already ordered the tent off eBay and I already have the light as well. If heat becomes a factor towards summer time I may have to bring the tent inside. We have a spare bed room that my wife uses for occasional sewing projects. I may just have to intrude for a few months. I don't think she'll mind.

i try and follow a simple strategy for heat / ventilation.
if it's heat just coming off your bulb aka your temps are normal at night you need to pull the hot air out.
if it's constant heat aka nearing summertime you need to push more cool air in.
easiest way i found to get rid of radiant heat from a non cooled light is go a size or 2 up in carbon filter & fan putting it on the lighting schedule.
once you put it together take a pic even if the heat is too much i wanna see what it looks like to fit a sun in a dresser basically

I am i a 4x3x7 closet, wooden, in the garage, 400w HPS 12/12 lights on at night with a hood like yours. It takes 3 desk fans for me to keep my sweat box under 90. A 400w has a footprint roughly 4x4~6x6ft depending on hoods. I recall in my reading 1000w will cover 8x8~10x10ft. You will face a) light leak like a mofo through cracks, its going to look like you are catching ghost in that tent. b) wasted energy.
I say if you want to use the light return/craigslist the tent and go bigger.

@Talrox Once again thank you for the advice. I will attempt to make the setup work while keeping in mind your "cool in/hot out" method. I will in fact take a picture of the setup for your own personal amusement. That can be expected on or around May 4th according to the tracking information.

@Californicator Not what I wanted to hear but I assume it the truth and valuable advice. It's looking like I will either have to return the light or bring my setup inside. I was only planning on 4 plants so the 2x4x5 tent is perfect size. If I must return the 1000W, I will. Is there a way to tell if a 1000W bulb has been ran? I would at least like to test run this setup before I return the $40 bulb for a smaller one.

Thanks again!

use some kinda cool tube set up....i think 1000 watt is asking for trouble...and if not i think its going to be alot of work, time, power keeping the tent cool...if you do a cool tube properly its like the light bulb isnt even there....just the light is...a cool tube is more stealthy then a 6 inch fan....people that have "grow "rooms"" use 6 inch fans lol...for a smaller tent u can use a 3 inch high speed computer fan hooked up to a cool tube and it would keep your room temp as low as a huge 6 inch inline fan...( if you are running a carbon filter i would run a carbon filter-to-cool tube set up...if you dont know what im talking about you should look more into it....im sure someone understands what im talking about lmao . cheers

I'm looking into the Cool Tube now. So basically I could return the hood I got and purchase a Cool Tube and a computer fan and keep my 1000W ballast and bulb and I would have no issues with heat if I correctly hooked up the fan/hood/ducting? If that is the case I may do that being as it looks cheaper in the long run. Thanks again FLOWER!

I'm running a 2x4x5 tent now with a 400w hps on super lumens, big ass cfl, 240w blackstar led, and a 6 inch 450 cfm inline fan with carbon filter attached and 2 6 inch desk. Fans on each side of the tent.I havezero heat issues. I. Have a cool tube andd id strongly reccomend a ac hood insted.the footprint on cooltubes is like 2x2.5. Ill be buying a 600w andair cooled hood soon to replace the 400w.My 2 cents.....get a 600w lumatek ballast,or even the multi setting 400/600w.I have the 250/400 and love it.it runs both bulbs. I wish I got 600w instead. Get a good 6 inch fan.450cfm. And make sure you exhaust out of the room completly.I exhaust through dryer duct.

You will need like 6/8" extractor fan and filter kit also. 1000w way overkill like stated. You get more bang for your buck with a 600w anyway. I have 2x2 tent and have 5" High velocity extractor kit, 6" fan inside and still struggle with heat and this in front a cold window getting cold air in as in UK and it's always cold here lol. Don't think you realise what a fight you have on your hands.

@BudReaky Thanks for the advice. Sounds like a legit setup you got. I can picture it. I may just take back the setup I got and get one like you described. It's not too hot out here yet so I shouldn't have problems with heat yet with a 600w vented hood.

@djlifeline I've accepted the fact that I will most likely be downgrading my bulb's wattage output. I'll most likely go 600w for this tent. Thanks!

If you look in my profile in my galleries there's pics of my setup. If I could do it again id definitily scratch the blackstar 240 and get a 600w instead.and I telling you cooltube footprints are garbage.

I ordered everything except the cool tube from gotham hydro. They will give u a better deal if u email or call them.I saved 100 bux and got free shipping

@BudReaky I have found a decent setup on Craigslist with:
600w Air-Cooled Hood
600w HPS Bulb
600w MH Bulb
600w Digital Ballast

All for $125. It has been used for 6 months the seller said but I don't mind as long as it works. I am waiting for him to call me back so I can take back this 1000w setup I already have. Thanks again!

That's the one! Lol. But you have togeta good fan.no duct boosters. A 6 inch inline fan with atleast 300 cfm should be 450 or so.I wish I could find that deal on c list.jump on that quick. Ask for a picture with both buls working too.and always low ball em on craiglist but even if he's firm get that shit.

So the guy texted me and offered to deliver the 600w setup to my house so I could test that it was working. He brought it by, showed me both bulbs worked (let em warm up and all) then we smoked a couple bowls. It was a great deal all around and I didn't even feel the need to lowball. Good thing I didn't because he said he turned two guys aside who offered $100 or less. Do I need a 6" inline fan just for the hood cooler because it is a glass encased hood and I plan to have a small duct fan pushing that hot air radiating off the bulb..? Then I was planning a 6" inline fan to vent the whopping 40ft^3 of space I have. The guy I bought the light setup from said he would sell me a decent 6" inline fan for $60.. Thanks all who are still reading!

.. so now that dude knows where you're growing? That's not good.

@PJ Diaz I suppose you're right but I never told him WHERE I would be growing. He seemed like a chill honest dude but then again who knows. My house is locked down well and is in no way under-armed so if it came to someone breaking and entering it would be their bad.. Not really too concerned about it..

I'm sure you're fine, I wouldn't stress too much -- what's done is done anyways. You just might wanna be a little more careful next time. I think it's safe to say that 95% of people that buy lights of craigslist are growing in their home. Prop 215 legal or not, there are bad people out there that wanna take other people's stuff. Luckily, most stoners are decent people, and I doubt the dude would wanna screw you. I buy/sell on CL too and also 215 legal, but one thing I always try to do is stay anonymous. I have a separate email address, never meet at the house, and hope not to let them see my license plate if possible. I might be paranoid, but better safe than sorry. I already get a little worried when I buy clones from the dispensary and know they have my address.

Anyway, I'd agree that a 1kw is way overkill in that space. Really a 400 or 600 is all you need, but I would go 600, because the ballsts costs like 1% more than a 400w. Also, definitely go dimmable, so you can suit a variety of spaces in the future. Get Digilux lamps if possible when you replace the ones you got from the dude. Check out ehydro.com for bulb prices, and get a Digilux for a good price, or see if they have a local hydro store that will price match. ehydro is a cali company, and has several regional storefronts, who will match the online prices if you ask nicely.
