2x2 grow tent with 4 cobs, which would you choose and why? Also what driver for them around 50w per cob?

Care to elaborate?

I can't see going with 3590's due to costs but you are free to explain what you mean if you'd like.

The lights I built this time last year are cxa3070's on 1500ma Chinese drivers and I'm extremely impressed, I feel I could even drop down to 1400ma. I would actually build 4 more exactly like them but iirc the cxb3070's are only a couple dollars more than the cxa's so it only makes sense to upgrade.

Anyone else have an opinion?

depends what youre into. 3590s offer the best bang for the buck as you can run them much harder for a given eficiency

Ok, 3590's are not even an option here but thanks.

Vero29 or CXB3070, which one and why?
Why? Only using 4 cobs, if you're willing to pay $5-8 more for cxB3070's why not pay $7-10 more for the cxB3590's? Holders, lenses all that good stuff, is priced almost identically.

If you go to a fast food restaurant and the cashier asks if you would like straight or curly fries, do you reply that you want a loaded bake potato when that's not on the menu?

Simple question here, vero29 or cxb3070? I know there is someone here running vero29's and someone here running cxb3070's, can I hear their opinion why they chose what they did?

Okay. My apologies. But that analogy doesn't really apply here. Anywhere online 3070's are available, so are 3590''s .

Vero 29 is more efficient and cheaper I think...

Kmog and GG, thank you for answering my question! That's the type answers I'm looking for, even though they are both sides of the coin. I love my cxa3070's but kept seeing the vero29's pop up and just wanted some real world experience opinions.

Just because they are available doesn't mean they are feasible to use. In Canada with the dollar where it is right now it's a tough choice. I can get Vero 29's for $36, cxa 3070 for $55, cxb3070 for $60-$65 and cxa/cxb3590 for $80-$90. cxb/cxa 3590 are out of the question for me.

The struggle is real.

3070's will be better for you.
The will perform slightly better and save you on driver cost/struggle for your setup.

4 3070's on a hlg185h-c1400 will be perfect
And Greengenes has an excellent YouTube video on how to make a 200W COB LED bar using those components (Cree and Meanwell) that is one of the best instructional videos for it I have seen. Leaves nothing to question and if you wanted a more "square" footprint you could use the same heatsink but cut in half land use rails to mount the COBs in a square pattern. Thank you Greengenes for that most excellent video!

I have no problem building them, just deciding what to run. Thanks to GG, SupraSPL, a friend from another site and a bunch of others I learned a lot last year but I know the tech changes rapidly and wanted an opinion on these two cobs.

Here's some good reading on differences of the Vero and Cree cobs you speak of.

To be honest, living here in Canada creates a very different buying scenario for cobs. I can actually save money buying Vero 29's even though I'd love to buy the Cree simply because a matching driver is so easy to choose. It would cost me at the very least, $200cdn to get four CXB3070 cobs and another $93 for the HLG-185-1400 driver. I can get three Vero 29 cobs for $111 and an HLG-240-2100 driver for $111. The Cree cobs would be running at 50w per cob for 200w total. The three Vero cobs would run at 80w for 240w total. I save $70 and gain 40 extra watts. Although I lose a bit of coverage because I have one less cob to spread around.

Anyway, like I said, I'd love to get a Cree setup going but for the $70 I save going with Vero it pays for 3 cpu cooler heatsinks and assorted connectors, reflectors, lenses etc. I wish I had the money to jump into the deep end of the pool but for now I will be doing a ghetto closet project on a budget.

If driving under 50 watts looks like 3070 is better. But if you running at less than 50 watts means you are willing to spend for efficiency. If you are then why not spend little more for 3590

Chart by supra
COB Comparison V7.png
For 3070 and vero 29
If you are talking about anything less than BB bin then anwser is vero 29
With 3070 BB and vero 29 it is about the same efficiency. Not enough evidence to debate. Decide based on following holder, power supply and its availibility, budget, drive current, soldering skills
50 w/sqft gives 200 watts for 4x4. Nothing wrong with a little more or less

1.4 amps (great efficiency)
HLG 185-1400 with 4x 3070 aprox 200 watts
HLG 240-1400 with 4x Vero 29 aprox 215 watts

1.75 amps
HLG 240-1750 with 4x 3070 aprox 240 watts

2.1 amps( cheapest)
HLG 240-2100 with 3X vero 29 aprox 240 watts

I voted for vero as they are cheeper+$24 at digi) and no holder needed. Although u may spend a little more on driver with veros as you need hlg240 instead of hlg185. 240 is aprox $10 more
I have not tried 3070. Do consider the extra cost of holder as well with 3070
With vero 29 1.4 amps with 240 you may not be using 100% power of driver but efficiency is not much different for 80% - 100% utilization

Edit: let me make it more complicated. also consider optics. PLC has $36 for 3070 but they also stock the holder and reflector. Do find their discount code. I think it is diy10 for 10% off
Vero 29 digikey for $24. Do know part number before you buy and not buy the old or 90 cri by mistake. Ledil clamp and reflector for vero 29 can be found for good price on cutter.au or jerry kingbrite so you pay additional shipping

Both grow and well....I have 3k CXA's too surrounded by Vero's [3&4k] :) and CXB's 3.5K's are going in on top :)

I have a real nice stretchy Sativa I have been selecting for the last 12 months or so....1st run under the 4k V29 is looking a lil plumper than under 3k only.

It all grows and certain cultivars will hide each spectrum's shortcomings from other cultivars grow habits... imho :peace:
