Verticle fluorescent lighting?

Sorry to bother but I have a quick question.

I was having a conversation with a fellow grower who says he is constucting a box to use Compact fluoro tubes going verticaly up the 4 corners instead of directly above the plants.

Would this allow for normal plant growth?

They sell units like that. I would think it would allow for fairly normal growth, prolly very bushy from the side lighting. I'd prolly put another set of CFLs on top too. Its also gotta be a big enough box to let the plant grow.

I thought I could remember seeing a picture of something like that. Anyway thanks for the advice.

Maybe once he gets things set up I'll come back with an update on how its going and some pics.

I remember seeing a post by a guy that had used a really large trashcan and lined it with vertical floros.
Don't remember seeing anything else on it after that... though it looked well done I didn't have any doubt it would grow something.

...but yeah some overhead of some sort is probably a good idea.

Sounds like a homemade Phototron. Very popular in the late 80's or so, I think? At the very least I would have a very reflective top, additional lights above would be best as previously mentioned.
