Very little vertical growth

Hey all -

This is my first grow. I'm using a panda film wrapped plastic shelving unit with spring clamps holding the "light shelf" which has 6 23 watt 6500k CFL
Pics attached...

I germinated and planted two fem'd seeds and they don't seem to be growing up at all. I have them in a pretty large container and the plant is bushing out around the container but not going up at all.

I've read a lot - over a year's worth of reading and research before I attempted my own grow - and I want to think this isn't a problem, because I seem to be getting a good sized bush that isn't going to need to be flipped anytime soon because it's not tall.

But when I search for pics of plants around the same age (1 month today) most of them seem taller. Mine just seem shorter and bushier.

Sub question:

Is it ok to cut a clone now? I would like to keep a constant supply of medicine.

Lights are too close? Move them away so the plant has a reason to stretch. Maybe include a warm white. I use Cree LED "lightbulbs" from Home Depot. They're optimum at 3:1 or 4:1 cool:warm (in veg).

I made both adjustments. I was going to pick up some more lights tomorrow so I can add a couple side lights when the time is right.

They look fine for the most part. They will stretch 2x-3x (quickly I might add) when you go 12/12. We're taking weeks really. It's pretty amazing.

Don't expect much from your lighting, it's not great in the grand scheme of things. It's a good primer if you want to pursue growing but don't worry about others peoples grows. Settle in and grow what you can, it's valuable experience in the long run. You can see how it all happens in sort of slo-mo.

Remember... a lot of people don't get past the initial seedling before killing it. If you end up with smoke it's a win.

As far as clones...take them before you flip. I've found it's easier.

I have some some 400w and a 600w high bay lights that I re-claimed from a lighting upgrade at a high school gym. I don't have the space for those yet, so I am going to use the cfl's until I get some more $.

I will just sit tight and enjoy my little hobby... they're green and healthy (looking) so I thought we were OK, but I wanted to make sure nobody looked at the pics and was going to say something was wrong.

theyre looking good, keep doing what youre doing.

tight node spacing is a good thing, especially with low power lighting.

let em grow more before you start cutting clones, start setting up a HPS flowering room while you wait.

By placing small seedlings into 3 gallon pots you are adding 2+ weeks unto your wait time. Our plants will not show hardly any activity above ground until the roots have found the inside walls of the pot. By transplanting into final pots instead of a small intermediary pot you will sit there and watch roots grow for a couple more weeks. By putting plants that size into 3/4 gallon mini-pots you would have saved yourself some time. Because the roots will find the pot walls much sooner and that signals the rest of the plant to take off. Then you'll see inch-a-day growth as you enter the veg stage.

First, thanks to everyone who replied. I read and re read everything a few times over the past few weeks.... Mainly just to calm my nervous concerns.

i have attached updated pics of the layyy-deeeeees. I flipped them to 12/12 last night right after I took these pics and water.

Thanks again for the advice and replies. I'm excited to begin the next phase.

Some nice growth in two weeks. now that's putting shelving to use sir, nice design. are you running same lighting, and how far away from tops? Looks like a potting mix of some type? Very green but no nute burn, they're looking good.

Thanks. I'm happy with how it turned out - and it was cheap to build, most of it was free or easily obtained.

The soil is miracle grow organic ... I bought it before I read negative reviews. Seemed like it did the trick.

I also have the fox farm nutes.. And using tap water that's run through a pur faucet filter.

I changed the lights to 50% each (4x23w cfl) 6500k & 2700k. I'll be changing it to 75% 2700k in 2 days.

Light shelf stays 1-2" from top of plants.

They've been going steady for almost 3 weeks.

The big one grows too fast for the lights, I have burned a couple leaves. Hopefully the vert growth halts soon.. I'm running out of room. The other plant is short and bushy, as an experiment I topped it right after I tossed it into flower

Looks like thrip in one of your pictures.

Do you mind providing more details why? It's my first grow and I ran out of vertical space. If I didn't top it I would have had to go up further with the tent and I didn't have the time.
