Very strange Flat Stem mutation

So, this is a LaPlata Labs Quin 'n Tonic that I have growing, and it has a couple weird mutations. This branch started out having 4 leaf sets at each node instead of the normal 2, and now it has started showing this REALLY weird flatness. This is the same branch from the front and then from the side, you can see how it is wide and flat like a ribbon. Also, it seems like it may be starting to flower even though it is still under veg lighting. Very strange. Gonna throw it outside in a 10 gallon pot and see what it turns into I think, either that or take a bunch of clones for monstercropping.

Ive seen this before... they never produce flowers. The lower branches might, but the top keeps on doing what its doing now. It will continue to grow leafs in a clustered manner.

I removed the top, and the lower branches produced some decent nugs.

Could it be an autoflower? That would explain only the flowering under your lighting conditions.

The other things i cant explain, ive never seen the flat ribbon like stem before. Should make for an interesting journal though

I had this same thing on my C99 last grow. It produced a strange cola that looked like two merged together. The rock on top was so dense it was almost difficult to break apart. Completely flat stem.

You can't really see it in the picture but the top actually is flowering already, moreso even than the other branches.

I suppose it could be, but it shouldn't be. It is supposed to be Quin 'n Tonic by LaPlata Labs, which is a CBD strain, so maybe there is some ruderalis in there somewhere to amp up the CBD and that could be where it gets some auto from?

Flat stem looks crazy

Time for an update, the QnT with the ribbon stem has been moved outside and is doing great now that she's finally out of a starter cup and in an actual pot, and figured some pictures were due since she's still going strong in flower (Actually better than strong, there is almost NO space between the nodes, gonna grow some solid colas from the looks of it, plus whatever the fuck happens to the ribbon branch)
Before we get to the pics, lets do a quick rundown of the mutations.
(1) Branch with strange wide flat ribbon structure as well as 4 leaf sets at each node instead of 2
and
(2) Branch with regular structure, i.e. not ribbon flat, but with 3-4 leaf sets per node instead of 2

One of the strain hunters episodes they walk through some mountain area with flat stalks; they say its a common mutation in that area.

Its definitely in there, i just could remember for my life which one.

Really cool plant though I didnt know people got this mutation i thought it was exclusive to some geographical location

I had it happen to me on a plant that i a little to hard. It started right above the supercrop and was like two stems cussed together. That branch never ended up streching with the rest of the plant so it didn't develop a good cola and what it did grow looked haggard as fuck. I ended up just throwing it out at harvest cause it seem like it was just asking for mold. I also had a plant with a hole through it from superconducting

I think it was the Morroco episode GemuGrows. FYI

Three out of four of my plants have at least one branch that has this mutation, it looks like two or three branches that fuse together or something, but from what I can see so far it looks like it's going to be one hell of a cola

I've got one too, Bubblegum feminized...I put her into flower ahead of schedule just to see what she'd do



Had another a few years back, and. "L.A. Woman" femi I think.....

Just an update: The bud at the end of the ribbon-branch is going to be a BEAST! I think the term for what's happening to it is whorled phyllotaxy, but I could be wrong.

I had it happen to a purple cheddar from connoisseur genetics, top cola. Totally wide flat stem and it actually grew bud but it was just off. And I wasn't happy with the purple cheddar either, didn't turn purple and didn't taste or smell of any cheese.

I may be misunderstood as to what you mean... my scenario with the mutation, that bud was as solid as a rock and coated in tons of little trichs.

It's called fasciation...I had a lemon haze with this mutation recently and after consulting a couple guys experienced in weird cannabis mutations I culled it. Apparently due to the abundance of stem and foliage, it's not a desirable trait. I was advised to top it early to "fix" it but I had so many other plants I just chopped it.

Pretty cool looking though:

I know I’m bumping an ancient thread, but this mutation can also be caused by gibberellic acid. I’ve used GA to try to make some beans pop and gotten this very effect. I believe GA is used commercially to feminize seeds.

The weed I got from the crazy cola was below par.
