David Siegel, the owner of Westgate Resorts, sent a surprising email to his employees Monday.

It said that if President Barack Obama wins re-election and raises Siegel's taxes, he will have to lay off workers and downsize his company — or even shut it down.

"If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, as our current President plans, I will have no choice but to reduce the size of this company," he wrote. "Rather than grow this company I will be forced to cut back. This means fewer jobs, less benefits and certainly less opportunity for everyone." In a version of Romney's "47 percent" remarks, Siegel added that "people like me who made all the right decisions and invested in themselves are being forced to bail out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed 42 years of my life for."

The points are ones that have often been made during this election. But what makes the letter surprising is the source. David Siegel is the man who, together with his wife, Jackie, built the largest new house in America, known as "Versailles." His story first appeared in my book, "The High-Beta Rich." It then made it to the big screen with the documentary film "The Queen of Versailles." They became symbols of outsized spending, debt and real estate in America.

But when the company started buckling under $1 billion in debt during the crisis, the Siegels' home went into foreclosure and was put up for sale. They cut back on the jet, took the kids out of private school and gave up some of their staff.

So why is David Siegel — a man who defined excess and debt in the 2000s — now saying that debt and spending are ruining the country?

I asked David and during a phone interview last night, and he told me that this was about his workers, not himself. He said his own finances have vastly improved. He has paid off all of his major lenders. "I have enough money for the rest of my life and enough to leave a good inheritance for our kids." He said the loan for Versailles is paid off and he's resuming construction on the home.

You will be seeing tons more of this.

I look at people like this man with some respect.

Seriously, if any one of you were to hit the lottery right now what would you do?
Something like a beach in the Carribeans sure sounds nice to me. There is no way I would have the initiative and drive to want to invest it into a big business and have the day in and out worries that an owner has. I would be retired. Work would not be a part of my daily schedule. I would get up when I wanted, go do whatever I wanted to do, come home when I wanted, go to bed when I wanted. Wouldnt you?

Did you know that asshole is building the biggest house in America at 90,000 sq ft, worth $100,000,000?

I read a different article on the same story and he was actually complaining that his employees and all of his friends get to go home on the weekend and settle down while he has to always be constantly working (was worth over an estimated $1 billion last year), and that all of his money "every penny" goes back into his company.

Hey Siegel, what about that $100 mil you're using to build the biggest house in America, asshat? What about all those pennies? Yeah, you'd rather lay off employees that vote Dem than spare a bit from that, and who the fuck do you think you're kidding, your company is alive and well and you're hoarding enough wealth to last you and your entire family many lifetimes over.

The fuckin' retards on the right who post here stand up and defend people like this. Blows my fuckin' mind... Sieg
el really cares about lowerclass people, doesn't he..

It's just like when assholes defend the drug war because "We've gotta save the children!!".

Go get a job and quit whining, perhaps you can then worry about your own money!

Yeah, the article I read pretty clearly outlined his motivations, the letter in full he gave to his employees stated it in black and white, he believes that if Obama is reelected, he will be paying more taxes than he would if Romney is elected because of each of their tax policies. So since he'll have to pay more, he'll have to use the money he would normally pay his employees with to keep his empire afloat.

..and like I said, who the fuck does he think he's kidding with that bullshit?

Ok, so I ask you specifically. If you hit the lottery tomorrow and walked away with 150mil bucks after taxes. Would you work? Would you take on the worries and pressures of running a large company? Or would you be like me and head for the hills and enjoy my "retirement"?

Would I work? No, because what I would be doing I wouldn't consider 'work'. I'd open a few different businesses me and friends have had in the works for a few years, put my parents into retirement and buy them each a house, and give a significant portion of it to people or organizations I felt needed it more than I did.

What is the purpose of hoarding hundreds of millions of dollars?

I would leave as much as possible to my kids and grandkids and hope they would leave as much as possible for their kids and grandkids.
Provide for my family for generations.

But first I would buy some insignificant trinket for myself.

Hazey Grapes always says if he ever finishes a grow he will "gift" his buds to everyone.
Awfully easy to say.
