so this was kind of random, but my neighbor across the street just knocked on my door a few hours ago and said "come over for beers, OK?" in his best english. i said OK. all i know about him is that he is asian of some sort and speaks almost no english.
so i go grab a few pumpkins for him as a gift and head over.
as soon as i get up the stairs of his deck it is 6 men speaking in some asian language. they put a beer in my hand and go right back to speaking in some asian language as if i wasn't even there. i just sit there, sipping my beer and being polite. every few minutes they toast to nothing. it just becomes time to clank beers and drink. OK i guess.
anytime my beer gets down to even quarter full, a new beer shows up in my hand before i can even think about it. food starts coming out, served by their wives. the wives then retreat inside, only coming back out to clean up dishes or rearrange food.
there are about 6 different dishes, each to be consumed a particular way, all of which is explained to me in what i find out is laotian or vietnamese language. i am given a quick tutorial on each in a foreign language.
as soon as i finish one helping, i am quickly prompted through a series of pointing and foreign language prompting to try the next. as soon as i cycle through, i am prompted to have seconds. then thirds. then fourths. my beer is always refreshed before i even know it. cheers and glass clinking continues on every minute or two throughout the entire night.
before i know it, an hour and a half has gone by. i told my wife before i left that i was just going over for a few minutes.
definitely one of the strangest dinners i have ever been to. a bit of culture shock. but i liked it.
