3 feet is fine. 2 feet is okay. your plants should be fine under that. 5 feet is fine also, but that much distance isn't REQUIRED.
18/6 is a fine schedule, I veg 18/6 on my plants, and they do just fine... not much difference noticeable than with 24/0.
let your buddy do what he wants, prove your thumb is greener by producing better yields, let your buddy be a dick and just stay out of his way... he sounds like the type to blame you if his grow gets fucked up, so just do your own thing and then wait 'til later for the "i told you so"

i have my own grow room. i have had limited funds but i made it work. what makes me mad is that he was given the 1k watt set up all he bought was a bulb... and dirt. the shed he grows in is his uncles who only wants a little bit of the plants so its like when a snobby ass inherits a fortune ya know? i would have LOVED a free 1k light set up.. and a shed thats bigger than the one i built myself. that way i could finaly set up my dream perpetual setup. i was happy for him but after trying to help him out with it and seeing how stubborn he is and hearing him talk about my grow and making it sound like shit, TWICE and once in front of his uncle.. so disrespectful.
ill take the advice being given to me on this thread. if his stuff starts going bad ill just tell him i dont want to interfere because if anything else goes wrong i dont want it to be my fault.

Growing with someone is hard at times. I once grew with this old bastard, he was like 55 years old and thought he knew everything cuz he was a longshoreman WOooWOOoo good for him, stupid old bastard, and he has this book from the 70's that said to snap the cola's over so the resins flow to the colas and it gets more potent, and i watched as he quickly grabbed both my colas and SNAPPED THENM over

if you are still in veg or early in flower (1-2 weeks) that bending of the cola would be ok. it wouldnt increase potency.. but it would give the bottom shoots a chance to grow and produce a higher yield.
but if you didnt want him to mess with YOUR half and did it anyways.. thats a dick move..

Sometimes the plants lag getting into budding. So I give them 36 hrs of dark right before I go 12-12 and it IMMEDIATELY gets into budding.
