If you're not using tap water, sounds like they're both good. But, given the choice, I'd favour the friend's water, as it comes from deep in the earth.
Why not run an experiment?
Wish I had the option ;)

RO water is usually used when growing hydroponically. It gives you complete control of what you're plants are getting. Reverse osmosis removes the minerals from the water. Where did you read it is a "must" for organic growing?

You should have an idea of whats in your tap water and its ppm/EC reading. If you have "soft" water, you will need to supplement Ca & Mg. I would imagine overly hard water could cause problems as well.

For the majority of people, tap water is fine.

Hard water can cause salts to build up on your roots, and can stunt growth. I have never seen this but it can happen. MYOB is right, RO water does remove all minerals from your water, giving you complete control of what is in your water. Most RO systems also have a carbon filter on it to remove chemicals from the water, including chlorine. However most basic RO systems will not remove Fluoride. So if your going for completely chemical free you need a pretty expensive filtration system. Or you can buy DI water from the grocery store, also known as de-ionized water. That can just get annoying and inconvenient.
