Is there something you should look for like moisture to know when to water again? For example grabbing a small handful and squeezing it? I just put my sprouts under lights so, I may have to water larger amounts due to heat.

Yep weight will tell you and coco likes to stay moist at all times. Not soaked but moist.

I have six 3 gallon pots, is using 3 liters of water when feeding a reasonable amount? I am getting a nice amount of run-off but, am worried that maybe I should be using more. Perhaps my coco is not packed tight enough so, the water is running through?


The plants are looking good though. I will post a few pics in a while to get some feedback.

More runoff is always better imo. Flushes salt buildups every feeding preserving balance. Use multistage watering. Water, let soak in, repeat.

I have read that 15-20 % run-off is wanted however, is this changed depending on pot size? If you have 2-3 week old plants in 3 gallon pots would watering everyday to 15-20% run-off cause potential over watering problems?

It wouldn't cause a problem, but probably isn't needed given the age of the plants. I am pretty liberal in my watering habits and have never come even close to over watering in coco.

I use blumats and have very little run off in coco, with no issues. Once every week or two I will hand feed to excess just to get some extra additives in and have some run off. As far as over watering, its nearly impossible to do in coco. As long as you dont leave standing water in your container then you are ok. The only problem Ive ever had in coco is fungus gnats, they seem to love that stuff so keep an eye out for them and some gnatrol on hand.

In my 60/40 coco perlite mix, I start watering every other day. By week 2-3 they need to be watered everyday.

Once there are some roots I've found that the more you water the more they grow.
