wattage to grow capabilities

how many plants will be able to flower under 150w hps, 250, 400, and so on? i was told you could sustain 13-20 plants under a 400w.

you could but they can't grow big, you could do a s.o.g setup where you put rooted clones straight to flower

it depends on how big you plan on having the plants when finished. you may be able to fit 30-12" plants or 4-4' plants. size of the room, growing seeds or clones. growing flat or vertical, the wattage of the light and the penetration, the strain, soil or hydro, etc etc

experience of the grower is probly the main determination of how many you can grow under a certain wattage light.

I grew 6 nice girls under a 400w hps....

well im mainly just trying to figure out wattage to plants. lets say im trying to keep them relatively short. maybe under 4ft. what im trying to do is get 1 or 2 "big bud" strains going while keeping the energy usage and discrepancy down. so im wondering what 150w hps can do, 200w, ect. im fairly new to growing with hps kits. i have done several grows with cfl and im good with the results but i am still trying to go hps and mh but keep the electricity cost around the same. so let me know the capabilities for what im working with. 2 "big bud" strains in 1 gallon pots or 1 plant in a 5 gallon DWC. havent really decided yet. thanks

here is a chart to look at for reference only. you need to cool the light to get it real close. you dont generaly grow 4 footers with a 150w because the pentration of light isnt very far. so 4 foot plants with a 150 over top will only give you nice buds near the upper part of the plant. so you lst the plants to keep them low and get many more bud site under the light.

I take wattage for lights based on usable footprints.

250w 2x2x2 growing area. This is 2ft square with a penetration distance of 2ft. As long as plants stay below 2 feet you could SOG maybe 9 small single stem clones. Or 2 trained , topping, fimming etc 2ft tall plants.

400w 3x3x3 growing area. Same as above. With 12-16 single stem clones or 4 3ft plants trained.

600w 3.5x3.5x4 growing area. 4ft penetration 20 or so single stem or 6 3-4ft trained plants.

1000w 5x5x5 growing area. 5ft penetration. 40 or so single stem or 8 4-5ft trained plants.


This is just a rough guide and can be different depending upon variables.
