I bought a $20 pH kit from general hydroponics. It came with pH up and down, and a small bottle of a solution used to show the pH. It's probably not super accurate, but it works well enough, and I can also use the dripper to get exact measurements on nutrients. You can also buy paper strips that will show pH but are only useable once. You've probably used them before in science class.

There's a company called HM Digital that make a really good affordable PH and PPM meters. Look for the PH-200. Many different online and ebay stores carry them.

Personally I've given up on the frustration of constantly calibrating your PH equipment. I've used two different PH meters and they all eventually have the same problem of not staying within calibration.

I've converted to the PH indicating fluid. It's cheap and accurate enough... Once you know your mix; you'll learn how to mix it every time without needing to check the PH.
