Rep points mean that people generally think you know what the fuck you're talking about, or what you're doing. You know how they say "take this advise with a grain of salt"? Well, after a person makes a comment, you can take a quick glance to the left at their rep bars to calculate how much salt you'll need for their advice.

Its a nice quick, easy way to tell if you should listen to them or not. I'm sure this has been stated a bunch in this thread

Edit: for example, you can look at mine and quickly deduce that you shouldn't listen to anything I have to say.
