i taught mine to grow.....later in his 20's he quit smoking pot..and growing....but it was a very good interactive experience...that and the quads .4x4's guns...but heck variety is the spice!
 
14 is young imo. But I first started at 13 and I turned out awesome so what do I know. :-P Naw, all kidding aside Racerboy as much as our nieces and nephews respect us, just like us at that age, they're not going to listen to reason. It's still won't hurt to give him a talk about accountability and responsibility but chances are at 14 it's gonna fall on deaf ears. He's only worried about looking cool and getting hj's. Atleast I know I was. :bigjoint:

thanks neo.. that's what i had thought as well.. i had tried talking to him last year when i heard he was acting like an asshole too, and had thought i had kind of gotten through to him, but it seems like he's back at it..
i understand how hard it is being a teen and all, and understand the need to want to fit in and all, i just hope he doesn't do much more than smoking bud as i know it didn't end for me there and i didn't stop till i was shooting dope into my viens several times a day, which is what i am mostly worried about.. :(

i think i first started smoking some where around his age as well crypt, and smoked till i was like 16 or so, then didn't do anything from around 16 / 21 or so, didn't even get drunk on my 21st bday as my old man was an alchy, and it wasn't what i wanted for myself at the time...

lil did i know the road i would be on several years later, lol, not really funny when i think about it, but it's the choice i made at the time..

i didnt start smoking till i was 15..but i kept it secret...my dad would of beat me to death...
 
Well if your pep talk worked for a good year I'd say there's hope with another one. I don't know, maybe chaperon a party at your sister's crib and see what the friends look like. You can tell alot about a person just from the company they keep. But yeah H is bad news bears for everyone involved.

Well, it's a bit tough that you found out after the fact that he has already started. Forgive the long post but try to see the message.

I have a son that just turned 19. I raised him by myself since he was 6 when I got full physical custody in a divorce from his mom. Yes I was a single Dad. Almost unheard of, I know. I started smoking weed when I was about 14 too. No parents to speak of to tell me otherwise. I went down the full road of drugs and looserville until I was about 34 or so. The point in saying so is that I know that had I had a parent or parents that gave an F I would have gone down a differant road. I don't know if this boy has parents or parent that have the tools themselves to deal with this but it appears that the ball got dropped already given this boy is already heading down that road.

It's not good for a kid to start doing any drugs at that age. If anyone can't understand that then I will just say that at that age you don't have the tools or knowledge to know what the other roads are that will bring a decent life your way and so the smoking will only lead you down one road. Again, I speak from personal experience.

My son never knew I smoked and I made every effort to do the exact oppasite that I got cheated out of. I talked to him all the time about smoking cigeretes and weed and drugs. I even took him to watch me get allot of serious work done on my teeth, including a bridge, when he was about 7 or so and trust me he is freaking religious about taking care of his teeth. I was a brick wall for sure but I did it because I loved him and did not want him to go through all the shit I did. I used to point out the looser kids, including the gang babies and ask him if he wanted to be like that. I told him all he had to learn is to say" you want to biggy size that" cuz if he wanted to be like them then that is where he would be working, in some dead end fast food place.

I am 53 now and my son is in the Army and just made Ranger. Not an easy feat and one allot don't make it into. My son had a dream, since he was about 13 or 14, to be in the special forces and he followed that dream/path. Do you see where I am coming from in all this blah blah?? I gave him the oppertunity to see the other paths that were available rather than just doing what allot of "so called" parents do and let their kids wing it on thier own. He has friends that smoke weed and he tells me how they just aren't going anywhere with thier lives. I told him for the first time, b4 he went into the Army, that I smoked pot but I have a medical card so I am able to do it legally. He did not care because he knew that I had been a responsable parent. that there is the key and the bottom line. No, I am not pounding my chest. I just know what works and what doesn't. Taking on the responsability of a kid, be it yours or not, is by far the toughest job in this life. True dat!!!

For you, my brother, I suggest that you talk to this kid from the heart and if you really care then you do everything you can to tell him why it is a really bad idea to smoke weed now b4 he has his life figured out. It's tough if you don't have the actual control of his life given he is not your actual son but you really need to tell him about what you went through and try to help steer him down a productive path. We, as the older and hopefully wiser adults. don't go through shit just to have some cool stories to talk about. You have an oppertunity to use the tools you have learned to help this kid. You said your fam had a history? Well break that f'ed up history. I did it with me kid and you sound like you care and are wise enough to know why you care, so get to work on this boy b4 he goes to far down the path. Take what I said for what it's worth but know that it comes from a person who cared enough too. Peace!
 
I told my nephew the truth about drugs and the effects they have on you. I also told him what age it was appropriate for him to start experimenting, and gave him reasons why he should believe me.

I also believe in the phrase "idle minds are the devil's workshop.

the thing is neo that idk if my talk worked for a year or not, or if this was the only time i have caught him since my pep talk, lol...

yah, he has recently stopped talking to this dorky kid who was his best friend and started hanging back out with this older kid that i didn't like from the get go..
his other friend was his age, kind of young and dumb imo, but it's better than being older and into more shit.. idk what to do.. he was just over here and i was half tempted to hand him my laptop and let him read this thread... i still might do that at some time...

i hate this shit. i don't even have any kids of my own, yet i feel so attached to him and feel it's my responsibility to talk to him since i'm the one with the most knowledge in this area, but at the same time, i know what it's like to be his age, and for fucks sake, i did the same shit when i was his age, and i really don't have a problem with him smoking, just wish he was a bit older, and i don't want it to lead to harder shit down the line like what i ended up doing...

that's the thing split, this kid is super active.. has been playing ice hockey since like oct in some league.. he has practice 4 days a week for like 2 hours a day, then games on the weekend that i was taking him to..
his play off games just ended last weekend when they lost their second game.. :(

Yeah, it's tough. Hanging with older kids you do grow up faster than normal. As I myself am a product of that. I don't know. Show him all those pictures of the meth head before/after mugshots that were floating around. That might rattle his cage at 14. Also nobody ever beat me. Maybe you should beat him. ;)

A 15 year old family member of mine posted something ridiculously perverted, on a young girl's picture of her posing in what would be her doggy style position. Her family embarrassed my family member and expressed their disappointment towards their young family member. He got pretty embarrassed I guess, but I've noticed he's not posting things that are crude anymore.

nah, i didn't fuck with his shit on fb as i didn't really want to embarrass the kid as i was often embarrassed as i kid and know how that feels.. but that was a good story, lol..
