I have read some interesting stuff on FEMALE plants that are left alone after flowering and never harvested.... and at the last minute.. just before the plant dies, it grows a male flower and self pollinates..

i have not witnessed this.. just read about it..

cheers

does the plant stay alive if its not harvested and will it survive till the following year?

It will die more often than NOT, depending on your location...

I had a broccoli plant last 3 years in Southern California . All the other Broccoli plants died.. but ONE just kept growing.. it even went to seed the first year... and then just kept growing.. it was FOOKING huge after 3 years

haha now adayz we have to leave wild weed in the hands of God... yah i have a plant grow in my kitchen on my window sill for about 5 months this think ended up being about 10-11 inches. ironically enough it had something going for it, it was a hermi. it later dried up and died =(. I guess this kinda backs up garden knowm reply.
