i found this lamp and am not sure what kind of light it is.
the lamp just saying max 300w
it gets really really hot.

Hmmm, you need a visit from BigBudBalls, RIU's resident weisenheimer when it comes to all things bulbous . Dimmer, eh?

Does this light have a ballast or not ?

It is possible that it is an HQI Metal Halide, if it has a ballast then look at the ballast and see what it says. If it doesm't have a ballast then it is probably a halogen like everyone says.

i dont think it has a ballast but maybe i will take it apart and check it out

Sorry man, I didn't see it had a dimmer, so it is a Halogen.

Would have been really nice for it to be an HQI metal halide though.

Sorry it didn't work out that way.
