that looks like a street light from a parking lot or the side of a building. my neighbor has one that he got from somebody who stole it. it looks like its an hid because the bulb is huge and it has a ballast. probably a high pressure sodium but it could be metal halide or mercury vapor...what color does it glow?

it glows kinda blueish.. so im thinking its a mh bulb. but im thinking, would a hps bulb work? it does say 400w hps on the side.

They are used commonly but usually have to be wired from 240v to 120v. And a regular HPS mogul base should fit it fine.

I have an old street light ballast i got from a friend too. Funny, it says 400 watt HPS on the side of mine but it works for both HPS and MH. I think you'll be fine. But im going to guess, it has a pretty loud humming sounds like mine.

It's likely an HPS. See how the bulb is white colored? It has some kind of coating that gives the light that bluish color, instead of the normal red. I'm sure the coating reduces output, too, so it'd be a good idea to switch the bulb for a normal clear bulb.

Nice. Thanks guys. I'm not sure if I wanna use it tho because the ballast being attached is making the light hotter then it should be. I'm going to have to think about it.
