What products do you use for massive roots?

Do it how you feel comfortable. You can feel the big thick roots as you push it down so just wiggle it a little and it rides over top or under without getting hurt. Small roots getting torn in a few places doesn't slow it down. They rebuild even stronger and thicker plus they're getting better Oxygen after you're done.

Do you spike it vertically deep down into the soil from the surface, or just scratch the top?

How do you avoid damaging the roots?

I'm a bit worried that my soil is going to compact over time during my current outside pot grow. I think I need to do this to get better top-down drainage and allow more oxygen through to my roots.

Ah ... just saw this now when I clicked through to page 2:


I'll do the same then, with a long wooden dowel that will reach down to the bottom of my pots. About 5mm diameter. I'll round off the tip, and hopefully that will nudge any roots out of the way, and not damage them.

All the way through the entire root zone. All the way to the bottom and especially under the plant. Don’t worry if it sticks a heavy root because it won’t hurt a thing. Roots split into 2 if severed just like topping does above the ground.

Yeah, I've used Harley's 'method' on this for a few grows. This grow I haven't needed it, but I have plenty of bamboo skewers around so it's an easy one. And more than just a handful of times. Repeated dozens if not hundreds of pokes through the medium at a time kind of deal. Never noticed that it hurt any of the plants and if you hit something and can't get through, just pull the skewer out and keep going.
