I'm looking to insulate my 5gallon black bucket. What is the cheapest/easiest way?

What's a good idea for the lid too?

I have no idea what the best way is but if you read trough some of the posts here you will get all kinds of ideas. I'll tell you what I'm going to do this summer I'm going to Hempy buckets. You could call the perlite the insulation I guess. Still DWC to me just added some perlite to the water LOL

I can't get my water to go above 68 no matter what I do. Keeping your canopy thick and even is the best way to insulate any type of res if you asked me!

Ovie: have you thought about wrapping it in a blanket of insulation like they fill the walls with? You should be able to get a big enough scrap to cover it for free.

As far as the lid is concerned, what's wrong with the one that came with it? HSA

I think his res temps have been getting into the upper 70's so hes just trying to get the easiest way to keep them cool. IMO. coolers
I like ones that have a secondary hinged lid that you can just lift up and check the roots.

I wrapped mine in the mylar insulation...but then that bucket kept leaking, so I had to switch buckets, and I hadn't fitted the new bucket with the insulation, except the lid, but it seems to keep the heat down a little perhaps...it helps, but doesn't fix the issue...

sorry OP , got a touch off topic, I know you get touchy about that :|
But if you want to set your temp and keep it there for days without chilling a igloo cooler is the way to go, I've seen some nice mods done to 20 dollar team water jugs too if you are into only one site per cooler. whatever the case good luck.

yeah igloo cooler is the way to go....in the end it'll be way cheaper than buying all that other stuff however 5 gallon is way to small to finish any plant you can do it but i find bigger coolers work way better and stay way cooler after 3rd week your constantly topping off anyway so your res temps wont exceed 65 i'd hope i have 20 watts of air in 70 qt coleman xtreme coolers 2 plants and its killer when i ran in 5 gallon containers the roots kinda suffered at the end because the whole surface is covered with roots no surface to air contact

check it out works like a champ and it cost me 50, 40 for the insulation and 10 for metal tape to do every bucket i have twice.

I use 28 qt Coleman coolers with just under 5 gal of water for each plant. I veg them 2 plants to one of those coolers. If I keep my room temp to about 75, the res temp never gets up to 70.
