What went wrong here?

Ok, i'm new so Hi Everybody <"hi Dr. Nick">!

This thread is here simply to ask for some advice from you folks who've gotten impressive yields. I seem to have completely cocked up my first grow despite quite a lot of research and effort, so any tips are greatly appreciated.

I vegged 3 Flying Dutchmen Power Skunk plants for 5 weeks under 2 x blue spectrum 150w CFLs until they grew to about 20" tall. I switched one of the blue lights for a red spectrum CFL after 4 weeks, then gave them 2 red spectrum bulbs 3 weeks into flowering.
I'm using a water farm drip/flood system which hasn't given me much bother to this point (fingers crossed), but i think that having all 3 in the same bucket has caused some root restriction.

I've been using Canna nutrients, which seemed to burn a little at first, but my girls soon got used to it and made spectacular gains in height and leaf production. I topped two of the strongest looking girls one week into flowering, but left the third because she was the smallest at the time. Right now, they're ~ 110" tall, but have taken some burns on the fan leaves (stoopid goddamn plants keep hugging my bulbs :P).

Here's the problem; 7 weeks into flowering and the kholas are f****ing tiny! I'm starting to see the calyxis swell but at this rate i'm only likely to get about 1 oz. dried from all 3 plants!! so i'm planning to harvest the top 3rd and leave the lower parts to thicken up. Then make some block out of the tonnes of shred i'm gonna get. I've been flushing with pure water for the last 3 days so as to get rid of the chem taste, and expect to harvest in the next week or two.

I do have some 250w MH & HPS bulbs which i bought at the inception of this project, but when i tested them out in my growing environment the temp. rose to over 110 degrees F! So i went with CFLs instead.

To conclude, what's gone wrong here? and what can i change in my next grow to improve yield?

Use HID lights from the get go! That'll increase your yield & u won't get those small whispy cfl buds!bongsmilie

Ok here's where you went wrong ( I topped two of the strongest looking girls one week into flowering ) What you did there was really bad and extremly harmful to the plant. You never want to top a plant once in 12/12. It can retard them, stress them into hermie, or dimish yeilds big time.

Now the cfl are ok but you will not get big dense buds with them, like you would a hps.

What you want to do is use your mh bulb for veg, and learn to controll heat, try and keep at 75 but 84 will not kill them, 85 and you will have slow growth.
Use your hps for 12/12 and keep a fan on them and really do your best to keep it under 85, try lights on at 9pm -9am.

Props to your plants haveing so many healthy leafs on it. A huge mistake many people do is trim off leaves for silly reasons like, air flow, more light to smaller buds, trying to juice up the tops. Just dumb shit!

High Times did an experiment with hot5s and hps in 12/12 and the t5s had small loose nugs that where seriously coated in trichs. And the hps had nice fat dense buds, but way less trichs.
I wonder how it would work if you hps till the flush then went t5?

Thanks for the tip, I guess one can't believe everything they read in guides :-P
Would you recommend topping during the Veg stage instead then? or just leaving them alone, and taking scissors out of the equation entirely?

You may want to try another strain of plant and see if it does the same thing then you'll know, could just be those seeds.

You might have a strain that needs 11-12 weeks of flowering.. with 4 weeks left your cola should blowup twice that size... Give it some flower bloomers and wait it out, it should fatten up a little before harvesting

So 110 degrees shouldn't be a problem then? I'd come to expect total destructive burnage from that kind of temp. given the limitations i have with space. + I have no clue how to get the heat out given that these babies are in my wardrobe, so an intake fan would have to push the air through a tube all the way across my bedroom.

If you are going to use mh and hps, let your plants just do there thing. Don't touch a leaf one, unless it is dead. Watch the beauty of the grow and wait until it matures before going 12/12. Once in 12/12 make sure it never goes dry. The trichs and chemistry that helps the trichs develope depend on moisture movement in plant. So just don't let them bone dry.

If you are going to stick with cfl and such, wait until plants get like 15 " high then top 2-3 inches down, and wait 2 weeks for the side branches to reach the heigth of the topped main stem (meristem). That way you will have a bunch of even tops for the cfl to cover instead of high and lows like natural growing.

Main thing no matter what way you go, is a decent veg and no 12/12 before mature. Lots do it and they suffer smaller yeilds and possible stress/hermies/tards. bongsmilie

The plants react to temps, with out co2 you do not want to go above 84 and at 90(prolong periods)they will stop growing and start fading fast

Hmm, i see, so get them to work harder on those branches. Thanks man, i've got some KC Brains' NL seeds in storage so think i'll definitely give that a shot with those.

Yup, I suspected as much, as things stand they're nowhere near an air outlet so setting up a cooling system would be a proper PITA. ;-)

Ok that makes sense to me, i've waited this long so a few more weeks shouldn't be a problem. I'm just surprised that Flying Dutchmen advertise this as a 6-8 week strain, & i'm using Hyrdo culture, but as i still have a lot of white hairs on the tops i think i'll wait it out, thanks dude.

Dont ever Top a plant during flower coz it will just stress the plant out and you wont get any benefit at all from it. Anything like Topping or FIMming should be done at least 2 weeks before turning to flower so the plants have some time to recover and grow.

Ive seen 6-8 week flowering but in all honestly most plants will need 10-11 weeks to finish. I wouldnt worry to to to to much about it they will weigh up in time
