A node is where new sets of leaves come out from the stem.

thanks yall! so if someone says cut above the 2nd true node, count one set of two leafs then go up to the second set of two then make my cut just above it? +rep yall!

yes you are counting them correctly.
but you probably shouldnt cut em until 4 or 5 like he said

If your counting the leaves on each side, yes.
Just make sure you're not counting the Very first set, those little round looking leaves (Cotyledon). They are not "true" leaves.
