What's a seed's shelf life?

I just ordered a pack of seeds, but I don't think I'll be able to germ all of them right off the bat. Which has made me wonder...

How long is a seed good for? And would keeping it in a cool place (like the fridge) preserve it for longer?

+rep for answers. Thanks dudes!bongsmilie

Taken from The Big Book of Buds Vol. 1: "The best way to store seeds is to keep them in the refrigerator and keep them dry. Dried rice or silica gel can be used as a desiccant. Seeds stored this way keep for years, possibly decades, with only a slight reduction in germination rate." -Green Man

The most important factor is to ensure you have good quality seeds from reputable banks & (or) breeders.

Just ordered my new seeds from Greenhouse. I got the colored seeds because I was looking for a variety pack, GH says the coloring process helps preserve the seed longer, and they look cool as hell.

Thanks for the tip! +rep!

Nice wan, let me know how those work out for you because I've heard mixed reviews on some of their newer strains they've been trying to work out but it could be due to problems with F2 hybrids or something. I am thinking about placing an order with them myself. Just as a storage idea for you; I have a beer fridge kept at a stat temp of 50 degrees F that doesn't see a whole lot of light exposure that I keep my seeds in. I store my seeds in there instead of my fridge in the kitchen because I don't open up for a beer 6+ times or more per day with the stupid light that goes on & off. They are in a nice cool environment with minimal to no light exposure. You can pick one up off of craigslist for dirt cheap & it ensures you're able to keep a nice variety on hand for future growing adventures if you plan to keep multiple strains. Good luck!

The pack I got is all proven strains: Super Silver Haze, Hawaiian Snow, Big Bang, White Rhino and Lemon Skunk. All good genes, so if there is a problem it will be obvious.

I'll just keep it in the butter drawer of my fridge on top of my bearded dragon's mealworms. I'm sure she won't mind :P
