Whats Next? Top Off, Clone, Prune???

  • Roll it Up;

Its been quite a roller coaster ride from day one; especially during seedling stage. Plenty of mistakes have been made but most definitely going to learn from. Here she is at Day 45 (germination on Valentines Day.)

I want to Veg for 2 more weeks since I transplanted her into a 10gallon Fabric Pot straight from a rapid rooter where she sprouted from. I believe that was one of my mistakes: too big of a pot for a young seedling. I think it took too long for her roots to settle and expand in such a big pot, hence her being short; 13 inches Tall, 20 inches in circumference. She should of gone into a Plastic Cup from day one, but was told that my Roots Organics 707 was too hot for a young seedling. She spent 2 weeks in Rapid Rooter, then into the 10gallon on day 14, where i gave her her first feeding with Nutrients for the Seedling Stage.

    Day 14: Seedling Feeding.
    Day 21: Veg 1
    Day 28: Veg 2
    Day 35: Veg 3
    Day 42: Veg 4

    We're on Day 45.

I've only been watering her Once a Week along with her Nutrients. 1 full gallon of R.O water set @ 6.5pH with Roots Organics 5ml Master Feeding Schedule Mix. However, this Last Feeding on Veg 4, i gave her 1.5 gallons. But does she look like shes drooping a bit?

Also, am i too late for clones? i am on day 45. Should have done this 2 weeks ago!!! And if I'm not, could this bee a good stem to cut off as a clone? there are 2 that are alike.

What about pruning? Does she look like she's in need of a hair cut?

And final question for this forum, sorry if im being a pest, Do i have a green light to Top off for 2 or maybe 4 colas? He'res the Top i want to cut off.

Or is this just too much for a Newbie like me? Is it even safe to cut off clones and top off in the same day? too much at one point? that was more than one last question.

Thanks in advance for your comments and constructive criticism. Wouldn't be at at day 45 without all of your help.

i would prune and clone....its to late to top. also i would try watering less but more often...its good if the plant needs to be watered every 3 days....you want the soil to be dry but not too dry. turn your prunings into clones. dont cut off the top unless its not receiving any light. i would prune off the bottom quarter of the plant...anything thats being shaded and not receiving light.
hope this helps ;)

I agree. less water more often imo I give my 6"-1' plants about a quart of water every three days. 2 quarts for anything over 1'.

It is never too late to clone really. But as long as you haven't flipped to flower, you can clone anytime. You can even clone in flower but you lose a month while it reverts back to veg and your success rate goes down.

I like to top any time up till a week before flower. The best time to top though is at around 5 nodes tall.

I personally have had good luck putting clones straight into 4G, or big, pots. You have to back off the water though and only water around the plant not the whole pot. It will wick to the other areas and prevent moisture buildup until the roots dig into those areas.

Finally are you using a soiless mix? If so, I would back off your ph to 5.9-6.2 in flower to make the P more accessible. 6.5 in veg is fine for soiless. It sort of looks like you are actually using soil though and if you are don't change your ph.

YEEEESSSSS! Thank you. Helps out alot. Had to re post this thread because i wasn't getting any comments. I understand that she is too told to Top at day 46, however, i've read that it is ideal to Top off once she is at 5-6 nodes. I have 7 going in 8. Or am i completely comfused here?

My assumption is that nodes grow in pairs and that pair is One node. Or is that two nodes that grow apposite sides of the Main Branch? If so, I have 14 nodes???? she is 13 inches Tall.

But not confused on Clones. Will cut some off tomorrow night after my Rapid Rooters soak in pH6.5 r.o. water overnight. Thanks for the help BuCann.

WoW. is that 6 Feet, 1 inch??? That's Tall!!! How tall was she right before you switched her into Flowering mode?

You say that its ideal for Topping to occur when she has 5-6 nodes, is this a good spot to top off??

or should i go one node down? Also, can i use this as a clone as well? or would she be to short???

Thanks in advance for your time and effort to reading and replying.

That is 6 inches to 1 foot.

When I top, I pinch the very tip of the stem. You will often see a leaf wrapped up getting ready to unfold and just barely beneath is a little "y" in the branch with a nub sticking out. Leave the nub sticking out and pinch off the top leave unraveling.

If you want to use it as a clone, which you could, you need to go down a couple nodes.

Also, i've never given it a feeding of just pure water. Only had to feed it Once a week cuz' everytime i check the soil, it is cold, damp, and humid. Never thought it needed extra watering. But now i will begin to feed it smaller servings of pure r.o. water set @ 6.5pH more often. Would a pure water feeding help drain some Nitrogen out???

Personally if that were my plant (and may I just say, it looks beautiful) I would definitely prune it. I would have topped it a while ago, but since we're going to be pruning it here it's wise to not top it and cause more stress to the plant than necessary. You want to prune every week or so and make a routine of it, if you decide to prune 4 weeks into flower like a madman your girls are gonna get stressed out.. and yes my dumbass did find this out by mistake. Do some basic pruning on the bottom of your plant and get the lollipop shape going, this will increase the size of your top buds while providing great ventilation to the plants. But before you do this, get your rooting gel/medium of choice ready and clone whatever branches you prune off that look like they would be good clones. After the plant heals up from all that then you should look into supercropping that bad boy! Supercrop it between half way below the top or around the top, I'd do it around halfway personally because there'd be more tops that shoot up that way. As your supercrop finishes healing it will be about time for another pruning at which point you can get your cloning equipment out again and repeat the process until you flower! But no worries if you have too much N, simply flush the soil with 3x the grow medium and your plants should be fine, they could look WAY worse believe that! Knowing things like this is half the battle here because now that you're armed with this knowledge you can fix it before it becomes a BIG problem. Personally I think they're beautiful and you should be very proud of yourself friend, you know all about training I'm sure, just do what you feel is best and go from there because in the end only you can decide what it is you want :)

Kratos, Thanks for the peace of mind. and more for sharing your knowledge. I literally just finished soaking my rapid rooters in r.o. water set @ 6.5ph. going to leave them soaking overnight. Getting ready to cut clones off tomorrow. Will read up more on Supercroping. not sure what this is. But thank you, thank you, thank you.

Ya back off on the Nitrogen, if you think its your soil burning it flush it with PH'd water. Did you just increase the nutes? The smaller one doesnt seem to show the same signs.
