Whats the difference between these hps kits?

Several reasons for the difference in price, 1st off is the hood shape itself, if you look into hoods you will see that prices range from $40 or so to well over $250 just for the hood. Both of these include the ballast, but one is switchable (mh or hps) and one is hps only. The warranty appears to be the other price increase although i wouldn't be surprised if you get the same warranty with the cheaper one.
Good job researching and asking, i even had to look these over to pick out the differences.

Thanks for the feedback, been toying with the idea of switching to hps and wanted something that was plug and play. Will a hps be sufficient to veg and flower for a 1 maybe 2 plant self grow? If so I'll opt for the cheaper of the two since I'll have a mylar covered cab.

36" tall will be very tough with that light, it will require at least 8"-10" for the light alone, so now you have cut down to 26". Now add in a container and you are quickly running out of room. Should work, just plan on lots of training, and short pots. Good luck, feel free to hit me up with any questions.

More or less, it is 24"x24" though, so too big for your 24 x 18....
May look into just doing cfls, get a vanity light bar from like habitat for humanity, some cfls and make things work for you, then upgrade when you can afford it. Your light will directly affect yields, but so do temps.

Well I'm not necessarily set on the dimensions yet, the only thing that's a limitation is the height which is 42". I'm currently using CFLs, and want to switch to something to get better yields.

O i see. Can't remove it? At 42" you could be in the range for that 150, just make sure to have a fan blowing between the canopy and light.
