What's to stop seed companies from selling random bag seed, hermie seed, etc.?

Seems like the perfect opportunity for a scam to me.

All anyone has to do is to advertise the seeds as being "landrace" or "original" or "old school genetics" -whatever…and then charging $100 for a 5-pack for them. Who's to know what they are getting? You can't tell from looking at the seeds. A hermie seed looks just like any other. A seed from a ditch weed strain looks the same as any other. There's no way to discern good genetics from bad by looking at the seed, in other words. All you need is a pretty package and some cool graphics to make them look legit.

I mean, we used to keep JARS of seeds from all the "lids" of Mexican we got in the old days. I never understood why this was that we saved them…and I mean POUNDS of seeds!!….but it was the universal thing to do to save your seeds in a jar! We just did it. Anyway, just imagine if I had saved all those seeds from 40+ years ago!!! I'd be richer than Arjan!

Lots of seed companies these days….How do you know the legit people from the crooks who are just out to make the quick stab in and out and then run with the money?

I've had suspicions myself about this, especially re-sellers who remove beans from breeder packaging but any smart business owner knows they will not be getting repeat customers if they pull this crap. It's all about longevity but I guess some people are in it for the hit and run. Even worse there are people out there straight up counterfeiting seeds, replicating breeder packaging and selling f2's etc or worse, what you mentioned.

I'd say repeat customers and a zealous community of growers on the internet combined with an already competitive market is what is stopping it from happening more often. Of course the casual hobby growers who don't do their research will always be preyed upon. You can see it already with the autoflowers and fem seeds. I've been a victim of this kind of fuckery myself when I first started.

also look at Greenpoint seeds. I doubt he got many repeat customers out of the people who bought MC crosses. I was one of them. :P

There are an abundance of breeders out there and it seems like they just keep popping up, but the majority of them are people that are known online that have been posting pics of their crosses on the forums before they made them available for sale.

I think it would be hard for someone to contact any of the seedbanks and get set up on there and expect people to buy seeds with no awareness of the breeder and no info to be found on the internet. It would be a scam that would net one or two thousand at most before word got out, not really worth it.

There are plenty of shady breeders and vendors. That is why we come to places like this. We can point out those who are ripoffs and spread the word about those who are trustworthy.

I agree except the problem here is that one person says that Gage Green (for ex.) are great and others say they are the worst ever…so how do we tell what the truth is? One person says Subcool is great and three others say he rips off other people's stuff…It can actually get even more confusing BECAUSE of the excessive information and corresponding points of view.

I've only popped 3, and got 2 girls, but I love the BB3 x MC - delicious, potent, and no problems at all. I got another pack of GP during the Sour Patch sale - Nightmare OG X Star Dawg. I guess I'm an exception.

Its all about trust and your experience. Most seed companies or breeders who are shady won't last. Especially online.

for every 1 person who receives a bad order, or customer service or product from whatever company they will tell 10 or more friends.
