I grew 3 outdoor plants in 5 gallon pots last year. I can tell you they will eventually need constant watering once or twice daily and lots of nutrients as they will use up all of what’s in the soil pretty quick.
Having said that, it is doable and I got a pretty solid harvest of almost 2 pounds off of the 3 plants. When I did chop them and take them out of the pots, they were rootbound as hell!
I switched to 20 gallon fabric pots for this year so I don’t have to worry
