When Is It Safe?

Hi guys can anyone tell me when it is safe to put a seedling under lights? im using two 400 hps lights and dont want to burn the seedlings up

Hi,Bifter,its not a god idea to put your seedlings under a hps lights,and certainly not under two of them.Hps lights are for flowering not vegging,you need MH (Metal Halide) lights for seedlings and vegging,or CFL's.You see the seedlings require the blue spectrum from MH,or CFL's,your hps lights are red spectrum for flowering.They might grow under that light but not very well.If you are going to use that light anyway make sure it is quite a distance away from your plants or they will burn,at least 3 feet away,and be prepared to see your seedlings stretch looking for that blue light spectrum that your depriving them of.

thanks for the quick reply,i have just looked through all my bulbs and i have a least 1 metal hailide but there are also a few son-t bulbs ,what are these?

The MH bulb you have is the one to go for with seedlings and vegging,but you can only use that bulb if your ballast is compatible with MH bulbs otherwise you may risk fire.My light can handle both hps and MH,but most lights can only handle one or the other.Be safe and buy a MH light with a compatible ballast for it.

its ok all my ballasts are compatable with both any ideas on the son-t bulbs

Son-t are High Pressure Sodium bulbs, usually made by Philips.

i veg all my plants under HPS lights and i NEVER have a problem. metal hallide are probably better for vegging, but hps do perfectly fine for me.

i keep mine in the dark till the seed pops out of the soil, then i put them under flourescent tubes till they are about 8 inches tall then i put them under the HPS

Thanks rob i have mine in the greenhouse at the moment but i have just got a propogating light ,perhaps i will give it a go
