when should i think about topping my plants

i want to keep them short and sweet at what age should i top them a freind told me about put a screen over them and pulling the new shutes thought the screen and when when a new one comes out u pull the old one out and then put the new one thought well i thinks that what he ment anyways i wish i could remember what he called it if anyone know what my stoned ass is talking about please help

thats called Scrog method... its so pretty much your whole plants get the same lights and the buds all act like main colas... look into it, and good luck
