ive got a few plants outdoors, yes im a newbie grower.
i havent got anything to check the trichomes but i just ordered a 60x magnification lens off ebay but it definatly wont get here in time.
the best i have at the moment is a 20x lens
all the hairs/pistils have turned brown on the top buds and on the lower branches its over 50% brown
because i cant check the trichomes, do you reckon i should cut them? i'll upload some photo's in the morning

..................................dont chop it looks tastey i know but wait till 75% are amber unless its a white strain then you go by time ;)

whew, just missioned out there (its midnight here) looked at the trich's under 20x mag.
the trichomes look clear as far as i can tell they may even be milky but definately no amber
just to make sure im doing it right, the circled area are those trichomes

from this information can anyone give a rough time estimate
on the cola's the hairs are all amber and on lower branches maybe 50%
and the trichomes are clear

Early and Late Harvesting

Every strain has its own unique window of peak maturity, typically one to two weeks long. However, there is a difference between har vesting early or late within that window, depending on whether you want a head high or a body high.

As cannabis matures the chemistry of the plant changes, as does the type of effects. While these differences in chemical nature still require a lot of research to fully understand, you can utilize them to produce different types of highs for different needs.
By harvesting earlier in the window your buds tend to produce more of a cerebral head high, an effect much more pronounced in Sativas than Indicas. A head high is more psychedelic in nature, providing you with a pleasant mental ?up? state, often ideally suited for social situations when you still need to have your wits and plenty of energy.
If you choose to harvest later in the window, your buds produce more of a body high, which is conversely more pronounced in Indicas than in Sativas. A body high is similar to a narcotic ?down? effect, usually associated with being ?stoned?. A down type of high is often desired in the late evening to calm nerves and drift into sleep. A late-harvest yield is often sought by medicinal cannabis users to ease pain and increase appetite. If you choose to harvest somewhere in the middle of the peak window of maturity, you don?t necessarily get the best of both worlds, but more of a happy medium. If you aren?t sure what type of high you like or want, aim for the middle and you likely won?t be disappointed.

I don't know where Logan Edwards (the author of the article you posted) gets his information from but CBN does not produce a couch lock high.
CBN is the only cannabinoid not derived from an enzymatic process (it's not produced by the plant), it's a degradation product of THC by way of oxidation (UV light exposure, heating of THC etc).
I think this Edwards guy should read some books.

CBN represents a 90% loss of potency (compared to THC).
This means if you harvest with 50% amber trichomes you have lost around 40%-45% of your plants entire potency.
CBN has been proven to not produce a real high but a more sickly / ill feeling.
Other effects of CBN are disorientation and a shorter high when high levels of CBN are present.
CBN is also a good way of determining the medications age.

CBD, CBG & CBC (and a bunch of other cannabinoids) are all much more desirable than CBN, although they are non-psychoactive they at least provide proper effects like reducing muscle spasm/tension [CBD], analgesic (pain relief) [CBD, CBC, THC], sleep inducing [CBG] & sedative properties [CBC].

thanks for that guys
ok soooo........ does anyone have an estimate on how long?
and if anyone says all plants are different they will be shot haha im only after a rough estimate
any help would be appreciated
