Hey this is my first time grow under a 600 watt hps 4 by 2 by 5 foot room I have 2 plants of the strain berry bomb im going on week 11 of flowering my leaves are yellowing and dieing about 50 maybe 60 percent of hairs have ambered I'm not sure wether or not to harvest the buds still look premature on it and don't seem dense but my plant seems to be dieing also when Icut em down how long should I hang them to dry before putting them in mason jars?

You really need a glass to check your trichs, like UK says.
Hairs receding and turning color can be a good indication of when to start checking trichs, but you want as much cloudy as you can get.
Clear is not fully mature yet, and amber is starting to degrade (or past it's prime).
I like either 45 or 60 power.
I find anything less doesn't show too well, and anything over, makes it really hard to hold still to see.

I got a 60x microscope on Amazon for under $10 works perfect.

fuck the fucking microscopes and the fucking trichomes and their amberness.
Learn to recognize when a plant is ready for harvest by its appearance.
Orange/brown, shriveled pistils; little to no young white upright pistils, swollen calyxes; robust & full buds; tiny sugar leaves poking out from clusters of swollen frosty calyxes, change in leaf color and vigor; maxed out growth....
If you must use your pocket microscope, wait until the plant actually looks ready for harvest. There is not point looking at trichomes until then.
If it is your first grow and you want to find out what a plant that is ready for harvest looks like, wait until you think they are ready. Then wait another 3 weeks. You wont need your microscope after that. Unless you want to look like someone who wants to look like someone who needs a 60x magnifier to harvest a plant.
To be fair, I was once scouring the internet for anything or anyone that would tell me that my plants were ready at 8 weeks. Even though they had white pistils all over and looked more like Mr Bean than Mr T. I have harvested early and was happy with what i got. Then, next grow, I waited. And waited an extra week. And then I understood.
Now I devote my life to warning kids of the dangers of pocket microscopes and trichome gazing.
And yes. I had...have a 60x pocket scope. I like to look at my arm hairs with it now. Wow. That is what a hair looks like up close????

Well your way is great as a rule of thumb way,
without getting to into it (as i do not really like your attitude) to deeply , i use my Mj as medicine, so different strains harvested at different times have different desired effects. This is a science.
Not looking for a ruck so an agrumentitive reply is pointless, i will keep my scope if it's all the same to you sir.

No problem. Disagreeing with someone is not arguing. It is a great way to exchange ideas and learn. I dont think there is enough of it in the cannabis scene. Seems like a lot more people just do what they "heard" somewhere on the internet without considering why. Thats how I feel about the trichome thing. It almost feels like a fad. Like a few years from now those guys will be scraping the stem and examining cell structure for the "best" time to harvest.
I am not saying that trichomes arent an indicator of a plants ripeness, just that there are other more obvious things that are just as good. You dont need 60X magnification to tell if a peach is ripe.
Why not take the trichome thing a step further. Take individual samples for lab testing to determine their exact composition of THC vs CBN. Then everyone can be all "dude, you have to go to radio shack and get a handheld pocket laser chromograph" ; )
But I do disagree that harvesting at different times is the correct way to achieve different effects from your medicine...or whatever you choose call it.
The strain should be the determining factor in the effects of the drug. The trichomes will simply tell you when you have reached a particular strains maximum potential and waiting longer just results in lost potential. At least in terms of THC.
But hey, a banana that looks way overripe for eating is perfect for banana bread.
Take my posts with a grain of salt. I stand by what I say but it doesn't keep me up at night. Its all good.

i thought shit was ready....pulled too early. then too late. yep, its almost like you gotta get used to it to actually have the eye. Shit. Sometimes the tops are lookin primetime and the bottom shit is still catching up.

Your method works fine, for someone with some experience under their belt, but for a beginner, which obviously the OP is, I feel using a scope is easier until they get comfortable with 'feel' and what to look for.

All of my pistils are brown. I haven't had a new pistil in weeks, the pistils are not receded a lot from the calyx swell. I am at 9 weeks since flip to 12/12. There is maybe 5-10% amber trichromes. Should I still keep going?
