Where can i learn about the depth of soil?

Every once in a while i will see a post that refers to the microorganisms and other biological processes that occur beneath the soil. I know that these things go on but i can never find a place where i can actually learn about what happens instead of just having a rough idea. Thought id ask cause i cant seem to type the right words into any search engine....
