...i tend to think the rep system is more for the noobs who come needing help, ...it kinda helps them figure who might know what they are talking about and who might be just another noob with just enough information to be dangerous.

...and i say 'might' because having rep is no guarantee someone isn't full of shit, but it does give the noobs some kind of reference in who is more likely speaking true.
