Which ballast should I get?

Dude, I just bought a Phantom, shit is the best ballast I have ever had and I have had a lot of them! They are completely self contained, no fan for cooling so one less thing to worry about fucking up. I have read a ton about them before I bought one and never found a person that complained. The other look cheap IMO.

A magnetic ballast has the advantage of being able to be repaired easily, this is something you can do yourself if you read how or take it to the closest hydro store for 30$ or so. If you buy a digital ballast, make sure it comes with some sort of warranty. I have seen everything from a 2 to a 5 year warranty on these. The big bonus for a digital ballast is that they are mostly all dim-able, a feature you might use often or not at all depending. Don't fall for the assumption that a digital ballast somehow "saves money on power because it is more effecient". On your power bill 1000w for X hours the same no matter the ballast used. I find digitals, in general, to be more friendly to wall mounting. You can find magnetic ballast used a lot of ebay or craigslist for cheap depending on where you live, but I would never buy someones used digital ballast.

i use the HTG 600w digital ballast. no dimming or switching. i also have some htg magnetic ballasts that have never done anything wrong either.

They both throw as much heat as the other but with the digital there are fans and heat sinks already on the ballast to help it run cooler.

check out htg and youll never want to buy equipment anywehre else.

I'm only hesitating on digital because I have read so many complaints about bulbs burning out quickly, some say as much as every 6 weeks. Even with the recommended brands.
Ive been running my current bulb with a magnetic for 6 months and its still good.

i have both and i had one bulb blow out a week before it was a year old. htg replaced it for free and that ones been runnin since then and will probably be replaced soon since its about 9 months old. I try to replace them once a year at least depending on the bulb. mh vs hps. But im blaming that more on the bulb than the ballast. HID bulbs are pretty fragile and to be honest something i did probably caused the bulb to blow ie shaking the hood, bumping my head on the hood, accidentally turning the ballast off then waiting just long enough to turn it back on. So either way you go you should be good. But id go with HTG because if any funny shit does happen theyll replace it no questions asked.

Digilux claim to be hot-startable. I've always used digital ballast, so I can't compare. I find the dimmability useful. I only use a bulb for 2 grows, then replace.
