Ian you don't want to veg under a red hps, it'll cause stretching and wide internodes.

What is your other HID? Any chance it's a MH? Got any other lights?

HPS is HID... If you're saying you also have a 250w MH.. then I say use that until it's time to flower. Too much red light in veg causes tall lanky stretchy plants.

Never had any issues giving plants hps. They love it actually. Just pay attention to how hot it makes things.

Sure ya did. You just didn't know it. While the HPS can and will deliver yields from seed to harvest.. It lacks the Blue spectrum that really spurs the most vigorous growth in the vegetive state. That is why T5 and HID grow fixtures come with different options. The T5's offer a Blue-er 6400K or 6500K bulb for Vegging and the more red tinted 3000K or 2700K bulbs for "Bloom". Conversely, the HID ballasts often come with both MH andddd HPS bulbs. This is because the HPS lacks the proper light spectrum for optimal vegetating.

What's the maximum space that you can have between the top of your plant and the 400w MH?

You want a good distance with seedlings as young as yours. Then lower inch by inch until it's flowering height.

3 small plants 3 weeks old i wouldn't waste the electricity running 600 watts, the 200 watt is fine until the plants grow larger. Is your lamp ballast switchable, I have a 400 watt and start at 50% then 75% then full as the plants get larger and fill out the grow area.

My freshly rooted clones and seedlings that just broke dirt go under a 400W MH at 18-24" above the plants. The bulb is in an air cooled hood, but I have no ventilation running through it.

I got everything all set up with 400w mh bulb and my temp has gone through the roof at 32oc and humidity 15% if i turn the ballast to 250w everything settles a 28oc and 35oc humidity

If you've got a 250 watt option on your MH ballast by all means use that!

No well, you want a blue light around 6500 kelvins for veg.

Where'd you get the orange light?

Ian I'd go to the LED lighting forum - subforum to Indoor - and post a threat asking about the color of your light and how it changes with wattage change. Ask them if it's OK to use that light with veg.

I suspect that you can, there are a lot of people in the LED forum who can give you a definitive answer.
