Why are seedlings dying?

I planted some carmelicous seeds that I got from amsterdam seed shop about ten days ago and they were doing great. They both grew about 4 inches in 7 days. They were growing too fast though. The stems were so thin that the plants fell over so I replanted the seedlings with the soil about a 1/4 inch from the leaves. Now the plants are just about completely dead.

I am using a 70w high pressure sodium bulb and the temperature in the closet has been around 78 during the day and 68 at night.

Here are the only things I can think of.

- The hps bulb is too far away and seedlings are stretching
- Hps bulb is too strong and I should use cfl to start with

Any Ideas?
