Depends entirely on the situation, wouldn't you say?
Generally i would say it comes from lack of work ethic or poor decision making, and being laid-off and struggling is not the same thing as "poor" imo.
The 2 most likely reasons are 1 and 2. I went with 1 because I think most people actually are of average intelligence even tho they like to play the stupid card as an excuse.
At pretty much any time 30 years or more ago, 3 would have been a plausible option for many many people, but unless you have chosen to live in very specific places i don't think it is an excuse today.
number 5 is strangely true in a way. however it only demands that a % of the population be poor, it doesn't necessarily choose who.

A good chunk of it is buying stupid shit they don't need. Idk how many people on welfare i see lining up to buy the new pair of "kicks". They spend hundreds of dollars on shoes then complain when they can't feed themselves.
I wish i could go to every "poor" persons house and just start pointing at the stupid shit they buy.

what is considered "poor" ? ....I made 90 -105k a year for over a decade..always had a good construction job since I was 18...started as an apprentice and after 5 years of working and trade school, I became a journeyman ...I was living very comfy for a long time until I injured my back...I have never sued anyone ..I did not get an attorney ..I listened to my doctors who said have this spinal fusion and you will be back to work in 18-22 months...That was 2 years ago..my back is still fucked up. Since I have not worked since the surgery I lost my insurance...I manage to get by but kinda consider myself poor currently...have 2 k in the bank and own a car that is worth maybe 4 grand...lost my home in foreclosure last year and now rent a home...Am i lazy? dumb? you tell me

Don't need to. I work in a supermarket and sometimes I'm forced to cashier. Most times i take food stamps I see the person with a blackberry and nike jordans or whatever they're called these days.
Did you know you can buy cigarettes with food stamps? You do now.

There shouldn't be food stamps. If you can't feed yourself go crawl in a corner and die. 8 billion people on the planet it's time to thin out the herd.
Survival of the fittest needs to come back with a vengeance. Don't get me wrong, I'd be dead in a few days. But I'm ok with that. Because I'm not selfish. If i can't provide for myself then it's time for me to make room for someone who can.
I say these things to people and they look at me like i just raped their mom. I wish people realized how insignificant the human race really is.
