Just curious as to why these aren't a thing?

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/322314519577

No driver, straight to wall. Besides ensuring the draw doesn't burn out your cable you could build a panel by sticking as many as you want to a big slap of aluminum... done.

I am sure efficiency is the main reason but balance idealism and practicality


Thoughts?

I have other uses for them so I am going to buy a pack of 10.

I can only guess that the claims vs price has those efficiency testers going "pfff ya right" and they don't want to waste there time.

Or the technical details give enough info to rule them out.

I don't have a good grasp of either yet... hence the post.

Those cheep COB's like that flicker something fierce. There's a video somewhere ( can't find it at the moment) showing one being tested and taken apart. maybe someone else will stumble on it and post the link.

yeah, it saves a few bucks on expensive inductors and electrolytics to make high frequency drivers.

It is probably not very good but it probably can grow a plant
Only way to know is to buy one and grow a small plant under it, it could be basil or something.

The add that seller as for their "Full Spectrum" Grow light cob may just well be the best representation of how an led spectrum is lacking vs hps I have ever seen.
Just look at that, yes hps is peaky but it is what is going on under that peaks the "get's er done"

This doesn't compare to good COBs at all. ~250w of COB = 600w of HPS in PPFD. Minus heat. COBs were invented to replace HPS in factory highbay/lowbay applications, putting out the same light intensity, same light spectrum, with less wattage.
