why aren't people getting rid of their HOODS?

Heat issues. Ventilation issues. You can move the hot air from a HID faster if you have it in a hood with ducting and inline fans. Not everyone can just hang a HID and go. Like closet growers for example.

you can put it in a tube and still have it aircooled.

To use vertical lamps efficiently I'd need more room. My grow space just ain't set up like that & the hoods work very well for me.

With a hood , I can direct mylight down towards my plants , and run a fan thru it. Plants can grow all the way to the glass because it's cooler.
