I remember back in the 70's we were taught the Japanese harvested whales for food and oil for lamps.
I guess they never heard of electricity in the 70's.
They like 'fresh' food and will gut a fish live, cool it's head and boil the body.
It's a big thrill to see the fish gasping for air while you eat it.
They eat domesticated pets when hungry.
Hang a dog in a tree and beat it until it hemorrhages.
More blood in the muscle makes it tasty.
The Japanese are smart people, just behind in many ways.

You boys out there in the prairies ever hear of rice? I got some Basmati here that somehow manages to get grown in the Himilayan terraces and delivered to my local grocery store for about $1 a pound. How efficient is that? You American farmers are just spoiled with your GPS controlled combines with air conditioners, youtube, twitter and jacuzzis. There used to be a time when American farmers didn't even routinely get manicures. Who makes your overalls these days, Gucci? Also, some whales are endangered not near most of them. Mind you, I root or the whales. My win-win on a Whale Wars episode is all ships sinking from both sides with no actual whales involved. They don't look very tasty to me either. I don't think that I would like blubber's mouth feel.
Oh, and that live fish shit is soooooo creepy! Really fucked up. Ate some live prawns overseas served in the traditional style. But it was about freshness, not torture. Did not find it pleasant regardless - but not utterly revolting.
