Why do people clip the fan leaves

i see in a lot of pictures people clip the fan leaves. i don't know the reason and am starting a scrog grow and would like to know the benefits of this.

cuz they block alot of light of ive also read that it diverts more energy towards the rest of the plant

it may stunt its growth if u cutt to many tho

is there a guide somewhere haha or how much do you cut?

this makes nada bit of sense since it's the leaves that make the energy that "gets diverted to the rest of the plant".. removing leaves removes energy to get diverted to the rest of the plant. and what light are leaves blocking? it's the leaves that hang out in the light and convert light energy into food by making sugars that the food uses to develop.. removing any healthy food is removing solar panels from the plant that it uses for photosynthesis..
ime, removing leaves is just a bad practice..

He must be talking about clones.

so its safe to clip fan leaves during flowering? it will do more good then harm?

Correct, the only time I trim is during flower and it's fan leaves that are blocking light from buds, other than that I would leave the rest on

i trim off all my fan leaves except the tops. it lets the light get to the stem the plants responds by branching out more becoming more bushy to take more light in. once i hit 2nd week of flower i cut off all fan leaves so that just the buds get all the light and plant energy. there was a thread on this site or maybe another where they showed a crop where he cut half of them with no fan leaves the other half he left normal and the ones without fan leaves yielded noticeably more bud. if you dont want to cut them i would suggest atleast trimming the ones that block your tops and bud sites

omg, you can't even be serious here.. do you have any clue as to how plants work??? it's obvious that you haven't a clue.. the leaves, you know, the things that you keep cutting off to get more light to exactly what i'm not sure, are the very things that make energy for the plants.. they are the power houses of a plant... they work by taking in light energy, from lights you know, or the sun if outdoors, and turning that light energy into sugars and other food that the plant uses to develop and build itself off of.. with out leaves, there will be no photosynthesis, no photosynthesis, and the plants not going to live very long, or at least not at it's peak production..
i don't see what is so hard to understand about this.. it's simple honestly..

only time i clip is if half the leaf is brown but the rest is still healthy i will trim the brown off.. have not had to that in a while

When growing scrog style, most growers tend to "lollipop" / trim almost everything under the screen Anything growing where light does not penetrate is basically diverting energy from the main canopy. Trimming the under growth is beneficial and will definitely save you time during the harvest. You should look into some of the scrog threads here. There is a lot of good information readily available. Sorry ahead of time for the hours of reading you're about to embark on.

edit: Forgot... Yes, when a fan leaf is blocking direct light of another bud site some growers will trim it back, while some pluck it, and others will tuck the leaf. It's all preference, you'll find your own style, I'm sure.

Agreed, the plant would bush out if you just simply topped it or tried some lst. I have no idea why you would cut off all the leaves, sounds like plant genocide to me

well, i will agree that with scrog or some other similar style grows, it's common practice to remove the lower leafs that are below screen levels, or on lolipopping, which i'm not a huge fan of.. other than that, there's really no need to be removing healthy leaves from a plant..
