Why not round?

To enclose a four foot by four foot square area (i.e. 16 sq/ft) requires 16 ft. of whatever material you choose to enclose it with. A 16 sq/ft circular area only requires 14.1825 ft. Where's the waste? In the corners. A circle yields the least surface area for any given volume. The less the surface area the closer to the plants.

you will build it.
and it will be a giant pain in the ass.
then you will realise that the reason the are all square/rectangular
is that a sturdy box is simpler and cheaper to build. simp-ler and cheaper enough, in fact,
that the savings in material for a circle are made moot.

Stop bein such a dick richard. You wont get any help like that.

AND... The waste is in the use of a circle in side rectangular or square rooms. Place a circle inside a square, what do you have? four corners of empty space. why not just build a square tent? be a lot easier too, no bending of pipe or wood to get the shape you need. As for the light, true light radiates in all directions equally, unless blocked or REFLECTED elsewhere, hence Serapis saying REFLECTORS direct light in rectangular directions, Enstein.

OR... be a dick, do shit the hard way, and find out for yourself exactly why no hydroponics supply sells round tents. But in the meantime, I agree with these guys, start lurkin more nd stop wasting peoples time with stupid posts if youre just going to reject everyones advice.

Despite my seemingly endless searching I have failed to find a round or dome shaped grow tent. Can anyone help me out here, or am I going to have to be the first again? :joint:
A very interesting thread G.J.! I'm in your corner all the way - who gives a flyin' fuck about wasted space or "easy to build"? Anyone that doesn't think it's a good idea - SHOULDN'T BUILD ONE - instead of displaying their ignorance about things that they clearly don't understand. Remember: "You can't teach an old dog new tricks, and you can't teach a dumb dog nothin'!". Ignore the "Naysayers" and go for it, build one!

I've had "A Round Grow Tent" (or something similar) on the back burner for a long time. I've been working out all the potential "wrinkles" for over a year and have a few ideas for you, if you want to go ahead and build one. My reason for wanting a "Round" structure was purely a design consideration.

The whole Round concept, in my case, is just to accommodate a round "turntable" or "lazy-Susan" type rotating floor. The "Rotating Floor" is the central feature of the design, so the "cylendrical" shape of the walls is just to conserve as much light as possible while minimizing "gap" between floor and walls. The "Lazy-Susan Floor" is just my idea of a "DIY" light mover. I figured, for a DIY project, it was easier to let the lights remain stationary and move the plants - so I came up with the basic idea a few years back. A friend of mine thought it was such a good idea, he wanted to build one for himself - which he did and I helped. We experimented with lots of different ideas, put finally ended up with something that worked. That was a long time ago! The "New-Improved" model I am thinking about is basically a round table top, mounted on a ball-bearing swivel base (like a barstool), powered by a barbeque rotisserie motor via a "Rim Drive" arrangement. I haven't got the "power train" worked out exactly, but the down-gearing on the rotisserie motor gives lots of torque @ about 3 rpm.

My whole point in saying all this, is just that someone else might think "Round" is a stupid idea because they lack imagination - that's their problem! To my way of thinking, "Round" makes perfect sense! It's not a matter of wasted "Space", it's a matter of what works best!

"Square Feet", that still cracks me up! That and the "diameter" of a square.

What is the area of a circle four feet in diameter? 12.57142 square feet!!!
that 12.5sqrft round tent will take up a 16sqrft room with no room except corners.. a u could fit a 4x4 tent in the same size room giving u 16sqft or growing space instead of 12.5sqft... plus it ezer to tuck a sqr tent i a corner and have space rather then a circle in the midle of the room with wasted corners.. plus it would look like a heat score, this big round tent in ur basement... light reflects and concentrates it better with angles(cornres) rather then round.. look at a diamond.. its shiny cuz the agnles the lights reflect concentrates it to shine... the better the cut, the better the shine.... it would only be good for vertical grows

If I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, I do..... Don't let the number of posts fool ya. the fact that the quoted comment wasn't even directed at you means you can go about and mind your own biz and quit dipping in mine.

All good points, but they ain't listening to ya, they don't want any non-circle jerk talk. It's circles or else....

Y don't u just make one with some poli and some PVC pipe

Or buy a huge dome tent and spray dye it white!!! You can take it apart and move it around if needed. It can even become a temporary home if you have to hit the streets runnin....

Thanks for your input, T.H. Cammo. These ignorant fucking pussies don't bother me a bit. Been puttin' up with that shit for decades. I was probably puffin' the herb before most of these losers were a little sperm swimmin' around in their daddy's nut sack.

I'd love to see this turntable setup. What a great idea.

"Square Feet"? Yeah, I'm a funny motherfucker. Might have to change my sig. "What's the diameter of that square?"
And after decades of smoking shit you come up with a round grow room? I should consider cutting back...

I put a little more thought into this and you should have rotating bases at the bottom of all the pots. And then you can hang a light vertical, because as I said, it is the only reason you would want a round room. And then you could have your plants rotate and get uniform light coverage for about 10 times the cost of just buying another friggin light and using a square room :P

I've been bouncing ideas off the walls regarding your round grow space trying to get something to stick. It occurred to me that you are trying to grow in a zen like space, where the ying and the yang get along and the deer and the antelope play. oopss, sorry, I've been up all night thinking circles until I'm blue in the face. I think your idea might actually work in space. We could use the spent rocket tubes and convert them to grow rooms after we attach them to the ISS. Just think about it, we could line the walls with LED panels. Since the plants won't know what is up and what is down, kinda like this whole thread, we can train the plants to grow towards the center with vertical lighting. That way, all buds grow towards light in middle and a floating harvester could come along and strip the buds and then we can veg the plants some more and then re-flower. Think of the money you will have saved NASA. You, OP, are indeed a real American hero!!

My hat is off to you! In fact, so is my straight jacket. It fits you better.

In a vertical grow, yes. The poster never established that until someone else suggested it was the only reason you would want a round room. Start back at the beginning and read the rather mundane OP and his first couple of follow ups. I believe he was starting the post to be a smart ass, but it ended up developing into a vertical grow discussion.

As for your reference to dumbass, square feet has EVERYTHING to do with quadrilaterals. Do you know what one is? Square footage can be calculated for any shape, including a circle, however please show me where, anywhere in growing guides, books, pdfs, or any website for that matter that discusses the square footage of circles, or determining the size of your grow area by using a circumference and a radius. You won't find one. Everyone writes about growing inside and defines a growing space by width, length and height to determine cubic feet and just the width and length for square footage.

Yes most of my responses in here are asinine, see above for the reason. For a page or two, they were discussing using a dome of all things.... another brilliant idea thats going nowhere.

Before you call someone a dumbass, make sure that your response won't make you one. For your fucking information, we have already discussed a vertical grow as a feasible reason to try a round grow area. If you weren't in such a rush to toss names about and had read the entire fucking thread before responding stranger, you would of known that. I lurked these boards for nearly two years and have read just about every damn growing guide that is out there. Does that make me smarter than you? No, but the fact that I kept my mouth shut until I knew what I was talking about certainly does.

You should try it.
