The police don't actually need a good reason to knock and sniff, unless the sniffing involves use of a drug-sniffing dog (because that would be a warrantless search in this context). Knocking on people's doors to talk to them for whatever reason (whether you're a vacuum cleaner salesman, a cop who just wants to ask a few questions, or if you're doing some volunteer political campaign work) is legal in the US.No but gives good reason to knock an sniff for any false reason.
And while they're standing on the porch, if they smell cannabis, they may try to obtain a search warrant. They would probably need other supporting evidence to get a warrant from a judge than just saying they smell marijuana at your door though.
But the case is different if they can see something illegal in your house while standing at your door.
